INT. EVENING - A PRIVATE ROOM AT THE MENS CLUB 1926.

A handful of men are gathered behind closed doors. They are all elegantly dressed. A server comes around with a tray of brandies. The men are in deep discussion, among them, DR. RICHARD SANDS, an American archaeologist in his mid-60's and WILLIAM EDWARDS, early 40's.

WILLIAM
Richard, you're not being reasonable.

DR. SANDS
William, I refuse to play a part in anyone's political gains. You of all people should know that.

MAN #1
Dr. Sands, I don't think you quite understand our predicament. It's times like this that need strong leadership. People expect it. They practically cry out for it.

MAN #2
Besides, with your wealth you could have any position you wanted.

DR. SANDS
I'm sorry gentleman, but I'm an American....

MAN #2
...living in Great Britain....

DR. SANDS
That's beside the point.

WILLIAM
What exactly is the point, Richard?

DR. SANDS
William, I've made my mark in the world through archaeology. It's the only thing I've ever wanted to do. I put everything else aside...my wife, my child, my friends. Now, except for you William, my friends are gone and Catherine is dead. All I have left is Maggie. I want to spend what time I have left on this earth with her. God knows it hasn't been an easy life for her. I owe it to her.

WILLIAM
I understand Richard, truly I do. I wasn't trying to push you. I just thought I'd give it a go.

DR. SANDS
That's what I like about you William. You're always testing the waters, seeing how far you can get. I've always admired that in you. Well, I must be off. I have to stop by the Museum before I go home. Maggie is probably wondering where I am.

WILLIAM
She's back?

DR. SANDS
Yes. She just got in today. I know things have been a bit strange between the two of you, but why don't you come out to the house tonight and see her?

WILLIAM
I can't tonight. But tell her I'll call her later alright?

DR. SANDS
I will. I think she'll like that.

Dr. Sands and William shake hands. Dr. Sands leaves. William continues to stare at the door which Dr. Sands left. The other men look to William.

MAN #3
What do we do now?

EXT. NIGHT - A DESSERTED ROAD OUTSIDE OF LONDON

A car is seen driving down the road. It is a dark and windy night. No one else is in sight.

INT. DR. SANDS' CAR.

Dr. Sands is lost in his thoughts. A tree branch falls in front of the car, he swerves to avoid it, gets around the branch and looks behind him. When he turns back around he has to stop suddenly as he almost hits a car pulled off on the side of the road. This car's hood is up and a MAN is bending over the engine.

EXT. NIGHT - A DESSERTED ROAD OUTSIDE OF LONDON

Dr. Sands car pulls up behind the troubled car and stops. He gets out.

DR. SANDS
Looks like you're having problems. Can I help you?

MAN
Yes, I think you can.

Man turns around and clobbers Dr. Sands on the head knocking him to the ground unconscious. The man drags Dr. Sands back to his car and loads him in it. The man releases the brake and pushes it down the hillside where it CRASHES into a ball of fire. The man gets back into his own car and drives back towards London.

EXT. DAY - A BEAUTIFUL ESTATE IN THE SURROUNDING HILLS OF LONDON.

INT. A HUGE STUDY.

Leather upholstery and the smell of old money permeate the room. Sitting behind an antique desk is CARDLES, the family solicitor. In front of him sits DR. MARGARET "MAGGIE" SANDS, daughter to the late Dr. Richard Sands. MAGGIE is American, around 30 years old, tall, long red hair and a fiery will to match.

MAGGIE
There has to be some way out of this!

CARDLES
I'm sorry my dear but your father's will leaves no loopholes.

MAGGIE
I refuse to go through with it.

CARDLES
You'll be penniless if you don't.

MAGGIE
Cardles, arranged marriages went out with the dark ages....this is 1926!

CARDLES
He just wanted you and your inheritance to be safe.

MAGGIE
I don't want to be stuck in a marriage with someone I don't love. I cared for William once, but not anymore. Please Cardles, help me out of this! Another will maybe?

CARDLES
I'm reading the only will that he left. It clearly states that you must marry William Edwards or forfeit your inheritance. I'm not telling you anything you don't know.

MAGGIE
But my father was going to change that, I know he was.

CARDLES
I'm sorry my dear. We never plan on dying when we want to

MAGGIE
If my father were alive today ...he'd ....he'd ....(a thought) if my father were alive--

CARDLES
Maggie, he isn't alive and you have to marry William by the end of the month or you lose your inheritance. Do you want to see all that your father worked for go to some long-forgotten charity?

MAGGIE
It won't Cardles, it won't. I have an idea....

EXT. DAY - ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL ESTATE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE.

INT. PARLOUR ROOM

William Edwards, and his cronies are enjoying a brandy. A CRONIE gives a toast.

CRONIE #1
Here's to the late Dr. Richard Sands, archaeologist, friend and one of the wealthiest men of America.

CRONIE #2
And one of the most powerful!

ALL
Here, here!

CRONIE #3
Well, William, this small tragedy has turned out all right for you, hasn't it?

WILLIAM
Yes it has, my good man. It's true I've lost a friend but I've gained a bride and more importantly, her inheritance.

CRONIE #1
Not unless she decides to go back to America. How can you stop her then? She's a strong-minded woman.

CRONIE #2
Yes, she doesn't come by that red hair for nothing!

WILLIAM
She won't go anywhere right now. She needs time to grieve. But just as a precaution, I'll have her followed. And at the end of the month we shall be married. Then I, as head of the household, will take over her fortune.

CRONIE #3
She's not going to be easy to control.

WILLIAM
If she gets out of hand, I'll take care of her. Yes, I think I've got all the bases covered. And with our combined fortunes, I'll be able to buy the title of Prime Minister and be one of the most powerful men in the world.

CRONIE #1
Here's to power!

They all raise their glasses in another toast.

INT. DAY - THE SANDS ESTATE, MAGGIE'S BEDROOM.

Maggie is packing clothes while JONATHAN CARNAHAN looks on. A MAID enters with a tea tray.

JONATHAN
No.

MAGGIE
Please Jonathan, you've got to do this for me.

JONATHAN
No.

MAGGIE
Jonathan, you, Evie and I have been friends since childhood. We've always looked out for each other....remember the time your father took us to the palace and you stole the King's crown when he wasn't looking?

JONATHAN
Yes.

MAGGIE
Who saved your measly little hide?

JONATHAN
You did.

MAGGIE
So please help me!

The maid finishes setting out tea.

MAID
Would you like me to help you pack, miss?

MAGGIE
No thank you , that won't be necessary.

MAID
Are you sure miss?

MAGGIE
Yes, I'm sure. Please leave us.

MAID
Yes miss.

Maid exits, closing door slowly but not all of the way.

JONATHAN
You don't know what you're asking Maggie. This is dangerous stuff...

MAGGIE
I'm a doctor of archaeology myself you know. You think I don't know danger? My father took me to the darkest corners of the earth on so many digs that I've lost count. I've seen things that would make your toes curl.

JONATHAN
But Magg's, this is different. This is unlike anything you've ever encountered before, the proverbial fate worse than death scenario.

MAGGIE
Jonathan, do you think my father's death was an accident?

JONATHAN
Scotland Yard said it was.

MAGGIE
Well, it wasn't. I know it wasn't. And if you don't help me, I'm as good as dead myself.

Maggie goes over to the door and closes it all of the way.

INT. HALLWAY, OUTSIDE MAGGIE'S ROOM

The maid, who had been listening at the door, steps back quickly as it's closed in her face. She looks at the door and then walks back down the hallway.

INT. MAGGIE'S ROOM

Maggie holds out pen and paper to Jonathan.

MAGGIE
Jonathan, I'm begging you. Please help me.

Jonathan slowly takes the paper and pen. Against his better judgement, if he ever had any, he starts drawing her a map.

JONATHAN
All right, then. From Cairo you go southwest about a day's journey by camel.....

INT. PARLOUR ROOM, WILLIAM'S ESTATE

William is on the phone.

WILLIAM
So you didn't get the location of where she's going?

INT. PARLOUR ROOM, MAGGIE'S ESTATE

MAID
(over the phone)
No sir. She shut me out of her room. But after Mr. Carnahan left, she made a call to someone named Pemboldt.

INT. PARLOUR ROOM, WILLIAM'S ESTATE

WILLIAM

That's her father's lead digger. What did she say to him?

INT. PARLOUR ROOM, MAGGIE'S ESTATE

MAID
She told him to call the other three and meet her at the airfield in the morning.

INT. PARLOUR ROOM, WILLIAM'S ESTATE

WILLIAM
And where are they headed to?

INT. PARLOUR ROOM, MAGGIE'S ESTATE

MAID
She didn't say. She just told them to meet at the airfield and she would explain everything then.

INT. PARLOUR ROOM, WILLIAM'S ESTATE

WILLIAM
Let me know the moment she leaves the house.

He replaces the receiver, thinks a moment, picks up the receiver and dials.

WILLIAM
Monty, I want you to keep a 24-hour watch on the Sands estate. If Maggie tries to leave, stop her. I don't care what it takes, but she must be kept alive.

William hangs up the receiver, still contemplating.

WILLIAM
So Mr. Pemboldt, it looks like I need to pay you a visit.

EXT. NIGHT, CEMETARY

Several men in dark clothes are digging up a recently buried grave. A grave tender comes up to them.

GRAVE TENDER
'Ello...Wot's goin' on 'ere?

One of the grave robbers hits the grave tender over the head with a shovel and continues his work. They finally bring up a coffin, put it on a horse-drawn wagon and beat a hasty retreat into the night.

EXT. EARLY MORNING, DR. SANDS ESTATE

Maggie is putting her luggage into a car. Jonathan is helping her load up.

JONATHAN
Maggs, are you sure about this?

MAGGIE
Yes Jonathan, I'm sure. It's the only way.

He puts the rest of her bags in the car. He gets in the driver's seat, she gets in the passenger's seat, they take off.

EXT. EARLY MORNING, DR. SANDS ESTATE, GATEWAY

Jonathan's car pulls through the gates and towards London. As they pass a grove of trees, two cars pull out, one from each side of the road and follow them discretely at first.

EXT. EARLY MORNING, COUNTRY ROAD.

After a few miles, Monty's car catches up, dangerously close.

INT. JONATHAN'S CAR

Jonathan looks in the rearview mirror.

JONATHAN
That fellow behind us is awfully close. Should I pull over and let him pass?

MAGGIE
Just keep driving Jonathan. I don't want to be late.

EXT. EARLY MORNING, COUNTRY ROAD.

Jonathan speeds up, so does the following car. The second car pulls out from behind and pulls up even with Monty's car.

INT. JONATHAN'S CAR

Jonathan looks in the rearview mirror.

JONATHAN
There's two of them now.

MAGGIE
What?

Maggie turns around to look out the back window. The cars behind are closing, trying to get in front of Jonathan's car.

MAGGIE
I think somebody found out I'm leaving. I'll bet it's the same people who killed my father.

JONATHAN
You're still not going on about that, are you?

MAGGIE
Just drive faster Jonathan.

JONATHAN
I'm going as fast as I can.

EXT. EARLY MORNING, COUNTRY ROAD.

The second car pulls along side and rams them. Jonathan looses control for a moment. The car rams them again.

INT. JONATHAN'S CAR

MAGGIE
Now do you believe me when I say someone killed my father?

JONATHAN
They're trying to knock us off the road. What do we do?

MAGGIE
Jonathan, when we get up to the bridge, slam on the brakes.

JONATHAN
Are you insane?

MAGGIE
Just do it.

EXT. EARLY MORNING, COUNTRY ROAD, BRIDGE.

Approaching the near end of the bridge, Jonathan slams on his brakes. The second car goes ramming into the end of the bridge, sending the driver flying out through the window. Monty's car, which has been tailing Jonathan's car, tries to avoid it, swerves as it attempts to go around. It hits the back corner of Jonathan's car and goes over the embankment, down into the creek.

INT. JONATHAN'S CAR

MAGGIE
Now step on it!

Jonathan steps on the gas.

EXT. EARLY MORNING, COUNTRY ROAD, BRIDGE.

Jonathan speeds across the bridge. Monty's car stalls for a moment, then climbs up the embankment and chases after them.

INT. JONATHAN'S CAR

Maggie turns around and looks to see if anyone is following. Monty's car can be seen renewing his chase of them through the rear window.

MAGGIE
One of them is still back there. Take the back way to the airfield. See if you can lose him in the streets ahead.

JONATHAN
Right-O.

EXT. EARLY MORNING, LONDON ROAD.

As they get to a fork in the road, they take the back road into London. A piece of the rear bumper falls off and onto the road.

EXT. EARLY MORNING, LONDON ROAD.

Monty stops at the fork in the road. He gets out, looks carefully at each roadway, and spies a piece of metal on the road. He walks to it, picks it up and realizes it's a part of Jonathan's car. He runs back to his car, climbs in and takes off in pursuit.

EXT. EARLY MORNING, LONDON ROAD.

Jonathan and Maggie are racing through town to the airfield.

EXT. EARLY MORNING, LONDON ROAD.

Monty in pursuit of Jonathan and Maggie.

INT. MONTY'S CAR

He can see Jonathan's car up ahead. He floors it.

INT. JONATHAN'S CAR

Jonathan looks in his rearview mirror.

JONTHAN
It looks like our friend is back.

Maggie turns around and looks out the back.

MAGGIE
Just don't let him catch up.

JONATHAN
I'm doing my best!

EXT. EARLY MORNING, LONDON STREETS

Jonathan is racing through London to get to the airfield. Monty is slowly catching up.

EXT. EARLY MORNING, LONDON AIRFIELD - FRONT GATE

Jonathan races up to the gate. He is stopped by an OFFICIAL.

OFFICIAL
I'm sorry sir but this is a restricted airfield. You'll have to go back ...

Maggie leans over to speak to the official. She shows him her traveling documents.

MAGGIE
I'm Dr. Margaret Sands.

OFFICIAL
Oh, yes, Dr. Sands. So sorry to hear about your father. You may proceed.

MAGGIE
Thank you.

The official raises the bar and Jonathan drives through.

EXT. DAY, LONDON AIRFIELD

Jonathan pulls up to the plane. He and Maggie get out and quickly and hand all the luggage over to the attendants. PEMBOLDT and the other diggers are waiting there.

PEMBOLDT
Good morning Margaret.

MAGGIE
Good morning Pemboldt. Is everyone ready to go?

PEMBOLDT
We're all loaded up and waiting.

MAGGIE
Good. Let's go.

PEMBOLDT
By the way, I don't suppose you'd like to tell us exactly where we're going, would you?

MAGGIE
Ah, Pemboldt, you know I love secrets, especially keeping them.

PEMBOLDT
Yes, well, it was worth a try.

Pemboldt and the diggers board the plane.

EXT. DAY, LONDON AIRFIELD - FRONT GATE

Monty pulls up and is stopped by the official.

OFFICIAL
I'm sorry sir but this is a restricted airfield. You'll have to go back.

MONTY
I need to get on that plane.

OFFICIAL
Traveling papers please.

MONTY
I don't have any.

OFFICIAL
I'm sorry sir but you can't pass unless you have proper documents.

Monty gets out of his car intending to threaten the official.

MONTY
Now you see here....

The official takes the rifle from off of his back and aims at Monty.

OFFICIAL
You cannot enter the restricted area without proper authorization. Now leave.

Monty gets back in his car, reverses and takes off.

EXT. DAY, LONDON AIRFIELD

Everyone is aboard the plane except for Jonathan and Maggie. Jonathan speaks to Maggie.

JONATHAN
Maggie, this is dangerous. Let me come with you. I can send for my things. It will only take a moment....

MAGGIE
And spoil all of your nightlife fun? I wouldn't dream of it.

JONATHAN
But Maggs, someone just tried to kill you ...us.

MAGGIE
Jonathan, I'll be fine. Don't worry about me. With this map you drew for me, I'll be back in a week at most.

JONATHAN
Then promise me, you'll be careful and not take any more chances than are absolutely necessary.

MAGGIE
I promise.

JONATHAN
Good luck, Maggs.

Maggie hugs Jonathan and boards the plane. Jonathan watches the plane take off with a worried look in his eyes.
