PART 3

EXT. DAY - HAMUNAPTRA

Maggie and her diggers have tunneled down to the catacombs. They attach a lift bucket to the crane.

MAGGIE
You two grab the dynamite and follow me.

PEMBOLDT
I'm coming down too.

MAGGIE
I need you to stay topside in case of another attack.

PEMBOLDT
Maggie, your father would never forgive me if anything happened to you down there.

MAGGIE
All right then, you too.

Maggie, Pemboldt and 2 DIGGERS are lowered to the bottom of the shaft.

EXT. DAY - DESERT

O'Connell, Ardeth and Jonathan mount their horses.

JONATHAN
Well, at least it's not camels this time.

They start their race to Hamunaptra.

INT. HAMUNAPTRA

Maggie, Pemboldt and the diggers have reached the bottom of the shaft. Pemboldt and the diggers light torches as Maggie consults her map.

MAGGIE
Let's go gentlemen.

Maggie, Pemboldt and the diggers start down the tunnel. They reach their first blocked passage.

MAGGIE
Set the charges.

The diggers set the dynamite, light the fuse and they run back the way they came. The dynamite BLOWS, an opening appears. They come back and continue down the passage, BLASTING their way through walls and catacombs.

EXT. DAY - DESERT

O'Connell, Ardeth and Jonathan meet up with the rest of Ardeth's warriors.

ARDETH
(in arabic)

Come! We ride!

They all gallop off to Hamunaptra.

INT. HAMUNAPTRA

Maggie and her diggers break through to the sacrificial room. The dust from the blast clears. They enter through the hole. There on the table lies the book of the dead.

MAGGIE
There it is! The book of the dead! Just like Jonathan said it would be.

She goes to it. It is closed and locked.

MAGGIE
Look around for the key.

Maggie and her diggers search the floor for the key. Suddenly the sound of a multitude of bugs reaches their ears. They all stop and look around but can't find the cause of the sound. As suddenly as it started, the noise stops.

PEMBOLDT
What was that?

MAGGIE
I don't know. Sounded like bugs to me.

They look at each other and resume their search for the key.

MAGGIE
The key!

Maggie finds the key open and on the floor. She takes it to the book.

PEMBOLDT
Maggie, wait, are you sure about this?

MAGGIE
Positive.

She places the key in the lock, turns it, the latches release and she opens the book. A gust of wind makes the torches dance erratically. She glances at the flickering torch then begins to read the book to herself.

EXT. DAY - CAIRO

William and his group are purchasing horses and equipment. William is trying to talk an old ARAB into being his guide to Hamunaptra.

WILLIAM
I require your services as a guide to lead us across the desert.

ARAB
What is it you are looking for?

WILLIAM
My fiancée. She's gone to a place called Hamunaptra.

The Arab is suddenly frightened and tries to walk away from him. William grabs him.

ARAB
I do not know the location of this place you mention.

WILLIAM
I was told that you do know the location.

ARAB
Even if I do know, I will not go back to that accursed place!

WILLIAM
Look, you, I don't believe in your curses and things from beyond. All I want to do is bring my fiancée back from the desert. Will you help me? I can make it worth your while.

William opens his billfold and produces a wad a bills. The Arab's eyes go wide at the sight of so much money but still doesn't accept it.

WILLIAM
Very worth your while.

William takes out more bills and pushes them into the Arab's hand. The Arab slowly closes his fist around the wad of money and nods reluctantly. Money wins again.

EXT. DAY - OUTSKIRTS OF CAIRO

The Arab leads William and his henchmen out across the desert.

EXT. DAY - HAMUNAPTRA

O'Connell, Ardeth, Jonathan and the rest of the Med-jai arrive at Hamunaptra. They come upon the diggers, surrounding them.

ARDETH
(in arabic)

Drop your guns and we will spare your lives.

They quickly overtake the diggers, disarming them and rounding them up. O'Connell walks up to one of the British diggers.

O'CONNELL
Where is she?

EXT. DAY - HAMUNAPTRA, TOP OF THE SHAFT

The diggers lower O'Connell, Ardeth and Jonathan down the shaft.

INT. HAMUNAPTRA, BOTTOM OF THE SHAFT

O'Connell, Ardeth and Jonathan get out of the bucket.

O'CONNELL
I never thought in a million years I'd be back here.

JONATHAN
Me either.

ARDETH
We must find her quickly before she reads the book.

They take off following the only path available to them-the one that Maggie and her diggers blasted out.

INT. DAY - HAMUNAPTRA, SACRIFICE ROOM

Maggie has spent the past couple of hours reading and translating the book of the dead, or as much of it as she could. She finally determines the spell that will bring Imhotep back to life. She speaks the incantation.

MAGGIE
(in ancient egyptian)

I call upon the Dark One, according to the ancient covenant, release to my keeping the one that I name...... Imhotep ..... Imhotep ..... Imhotep!

Just as she finishes the incantation, O'Connell, Ardeth and Jonathan run in.

JONATHAN
Maggie, don't read from the book!

MAGGIE
Jonathan, what are you doing here?

The pool of black water swirls and bubbles as a form starts to take shape.

ARDETH
We are too late!

They all stand and stare as a form takes the shape of Imhotep and he is resurrected back to life from the black waters. He opens his eyes and steps out of the water. O'Connell and Jonathan take a few steps back. Ardeth grabs Maggie and pushes her behind him to protect her. Imhotep recognizes the three men.

O'CONNELL
What have you done?

MAGGIE
Who are you?

O'CONNELL
Not like this is the time for introductions, but I'm Rick O'Connell.

MAGGIE
Oh yes, the one that helped Jonathan and Evie. Well, look at you, reunited again. Must seem like old times.

JONATHAN
Look, I hate to interrupt this little social gathering but what about him? He's alive!

Everyone turns to look at Imhotep.

MAGGIE
It's all right....

O'CONNELL
Like hell it is!

MAGGIE
You don't understand! He's not invincible. He's as mortal as you and I. There will be no plagues, no diseases, no world conquering.

ARDETH
How is that possible?

MAGGIE
It's all in this book. If Evie had taken the time to read it before she spoke out loud, she would have been able to control him too.

Suddenly Imhotep makes a lunge for O'Connell and grabs him by the throat. They grapple with each other. Ardeth and Jonathan try to drag Imhotep away from O'Connell but he pushes them off.

JONATHAN
He may not be invincible, but he's still bloody strong.

Maggie calls to Imhotep in ancient Egyptian.

MAGGIE
(in ancient egyptian)

Imhotep stop or I will speak the reverse incantation that will send you back!

Imhotep looks at Maggie then back to O'Connell. He drops O'Connell to the ground and glares at Maggie for being chained to her in this way. Jonathan helps O'Connell up.

JONATHAN
Maybe she really can control him.

MAGGIE
(in ancient egyptian)

Imhotep, you have been resurrected for one purpose only and that is to bring my father back to life.

IMHOTEP
(in ancient egyptian)

And after that?

MAGGIE
(in ancient egyptian)

We shall see what happens afterwards.

IMHOTEP
(in ancient egyptian)

You do not fool me. You will only destroy me again.

MAGGIE
(in ancient egyptian)

It doesn't have to be that way.

Imhotep advances up to Maggie. Ardeth moves to intercept him. Imhotep glances at Ardeth then back to Maggie, a look of understanding crosses his face.

IMHOTEP
(in ancient egyptian)

It is always a beautiful woman who brings down the strongest man. You have me in your power.

Maggie moves over to O'Connell to make sure he's all right. Ardeth and Imhotep face off, two ancient foes, silently daring the other one to make a false move.

O'CONNELL
Now what?

MAGGIE
Now he can bring my father back to life so he can change his will.

O'CONNELL
You're planning on taking him to London?

MAGGIE
No, idiot, I brought my father's coffin with me.

O'Connell grabs Maggie's arms and brings his face close to hers.

O'CONNELL
You listen to me. You brought him back to life so fine, go ahead and resurrect your father but then you destroy him. Got it?

Maggie looks at O'Connell in defiance. Ardeth is distracted by O'Connell's close proximity to Maggie, Imhotep sees his chance, knocks Ardeth to the ground, turns towards the black waters and speaks an incantation. Multitudes of souls from hell rise up out of the waters, taking form and substance.

O'CONNELL
I thought you said you could control him!

MAGGIE
I can.

O'CONNELL
Then control him already!

The souls attack O'Connell, Jonathan, Maggie, Ardeth, Pemboldt and the 2 diggers. Pemboldt runs over to protect Maggie but finds that she has grabbed one of Ardeth's scimitars to defend herself. While they are fighting with the souls from hell, Imhotep runs to the book of the dead, frantically looking for an incantation. Maggie realizes Imhotep is at the book, kills her attacker and runs to the book but not in time. Imhotep speaks.

IMHOTEP
( in ancient egyptian)

For all eternity, now it's begun,
Forces of dark, chain us as one!

As Maggie reaches Imhotep he speaks the last words. They both cry out in pain and fall to their knees as they both feel a terrible wrenching inside them. O'Connell, Ardeth and the others defeat the last attacking souls. They turn to see Maggie and Imhotep on the ground in pain. Ardeth rushes to Maggie's side and helps her up. O'Connell and Jonathan guard Imhotep.

ARDETH
What has happened?

MAGGIE
He just bonded me to him.

O'CONNELL
What does that mean?

MAGGIE
It means that if he dies, so do I.

JONATHAN
So much for controlling him.

MAGGIE
Just keep your guns on him. And if he tries to escape, shoot him.

PEMBOLDT
No...

MAGGIE
It's the only way to keep him in line.

O'Connell and Jonathan aim their guns at Imhotep. Imhotep stands, looks surprised but keeps his cool. He turns back to Maggie.

IMHOTEP
(in ancient egyptian)

You and I are one. If I die, you shall die also.

MAGGIE
(in ancient egyptian)

I'm not afraid to die. If you try to escape, they will shoot you.

O'CONNELL
Read the book. Maybe you can find a counter spell or whatever.

Maggie goes towards the book. In one fluid motion Imhotep closes it, locks it and throws the key into the pool of black water. Maggie and Imhotep stare at each other.

MAGGIE
Well, there goes that idea.

JONATHAN
Here, I'll just fish it on out of there....

Jonathan goes to reach for the key in the water.

MAGGIE
Don't touch the water!

Jonathan stops, his hand poised above the water. He looks back to Maggie.

JONATHAN
What's wrong?

MAGGIE
That water is from the black water of Hades. It's lethal to mortals.

Jonathan backs away from the water as quickly as he can.

O'CONNELL
So we can't get the book open? Well that's just great. You know, this guy has caused me nothing but grief.

In frustration, O'Connell whacks Imhotep upside the head with the butt of his rifle. Imhotep grunts in pain. Maggie cries out and doubles over, clutching her head. Maggie puts her hand to her head and finds a bit of blood. Her wound mirrors Imhoteps. Ardeth cradles her in his arms.

ARDETH
What is it?

MAGGIE
Everything he feels, I feel. So O'Connell, no matter how much grief he's caused you, please don't do that again.

O'CONNELL
I'm sorry. I didn't realize.

MAGGIE
Let's just get to the surface.

JONATHAN
What about the book of the dead? Should we leave it? It's no good to us without the key.

MAGGIE
No. Bring it along. We'll figure out something.

Jonathan grabs the book of the dead. O'Connell forces Imhotep to walk at gunpoint. They all walk back through the tunnels to the lift bucket. Ardeth supports Maggie as her head is still ringing from the blow. Pemboldt and the 2 diggers get into the bucket and are hauled up. As the bucket is lifted out of sight, a single scarab enters from the direction they just came. It starts chittering loudly.

JONATHAN
Oh no! Not these again!

Suddenly, scarabs start pouring in from the tunnel surrounding the group and cutting off their only escape route. The scarabs stop a couple of feet away from the group and wait.

ARDETH
Scarabs!

JONATHAN
We're trapped!

O'CONNELL
Anyone got any ideas? I'm fresh out.

MAGGIE
(in ancient egyptian)

Imhotep! Call off the scarabs or I swear to you, I will speak the death spell!

Imhotep looks at her to see if she's really serious in this threat. The scarabs advance. Imhotep still does nothing.

MAGGIE
(in ancient egyptian)

Do it Imhotep! Call them off! Imhotep still does not respond. The scarabs advance closer.

MAGGIE
(in ancient egyptian)

Waters from hell take back....

Both Imhotep and Maggie start to feel their life force ebbing out of them. Ardeth supports Maggie as she starts to collapse. Imhotep starts to collapse also. He quickly speaks to the scarabs.

IMHOTEP
(in ancient egyptian)

Return, my friends, to the tunnel. There will be another time to feast.

The scarabs pour back down the tunnel. Imhotep and Maggie recover. The others relax. Imhotep turns to Maggie.

IMHOTEP
(in ancient egyptian)

You are as brave as you are beautiful. We shall make a good pair.

Ardeth doesn't know exactly what has been said but didn't like the sound of it. He narrows his eyes as he glares at Imhotep. The bucket is lowered. Jonathan, Maggie, Ardeth, O'Connell and Imhotep get in. They are raised to the surface.
