TOUCHARD: One Name Study | home
Pam'sPods
By Tessa
Pam asked me to write a little piece on her behalf.
Pam sent me all the certificates she obtained back in 1997. She has been researching a long time! We share the same great-grandfather - John, born in 1852. My grandfather was his eldest child George, Pam's grandfather was Henry (born in 1880 when George was six)
Pam says we do not look alike, I have dark features and she has fair hair and that her dad (Henry Jr.) followed the maternal side of their family. However they have the dark Touchard eyes and thick brows that seem a common feature. A very common thread seems to be congeniality and generally pleasing personalities and kindness. Pam was born in Bethnal Green but no longer lives there due to finding work and a husband on the South Coast of England.
The following are extracts from our correspondence:
"Henry and brother James changed their surname when they joined the army to Johnson which was their mothers maiden name why I am not sure but the story goes that they had a big row with their father so changed names.
My grandfather died very young, and my grandmother then went to live with brother James and had more children, very confusing.
I have two photos of Great Gran Touchard taken about 1936, she died in 1939.
I have found another 2nd cousin he comes down from Charles son of John and Mary Ann but he is not interested in Family History, but he did give me some information on his grandfather.
I have photos of Gran Gran Touchard, it looks as if they were at a wedding, could have been
my Dads sister Florrie, except her husband is in one of the photos and does not look like a bridegroom. Do you ever hear what had happened to Great Grandad Touchard? I cannot find his death but in may be under a different spelling. Touchard is very difficult to look for, I have even found it under Fouchard! My Aunt Florrie saw old John Touchard (her grandad) back in the twenties, she saw him walking down a street in the East End. My Aunt Florrie was my major source of family history, sadly she died before I could get all the family information.
My Dad had lots of memories of his childhood, one of them was that he had two very old Grans living with him and his family when he was around seven years old. My Nan was always putting people up in her house, one of these old Grans lived till she was over 100 years old, so my Dad said, but to a child over 50 is old!!!! I have found one of them and it was Mary Ann's mother -Ann so now have to find the other one. My aunt Elsie lived with my Nan off Bodney Road in Hackney followed by uncle Jim.
I still have not found the death of Sarah Hargrove/Touchard
Did you hear that Olive Young found Matthew and Susannas wedding at last they were married at St.Dunstans in 1725, Olive was so pleased she has spent years looking for that, and the files are so old and nearly unreadable.
My Dad still has one half-brother alive and that's Patrick. He now lives in Dorset I do ring him now and again but he is not interested in Family History, does not like me talking about it much. My Unle Pat, had not heard of the printing shop. Such a pity.
Uncle Albert dissapeared, which is sad, his wife did not like him mixing with his family,
which upset my Nan Johnson very much. She was a lovely old Lady, I was very fond of her, they lived in the buildings by Hackney Downs Station, used to go there a lot, she used to take me down to the shops, still with her pinny on and old slippers. She was also a big lady, very kind I think thats where my Dad got his kindness from, my Dad was lovely."
