How Sephiroth Came to the Madhouse
Once, there was only Vincent and I living in the Madhouse, as he was the only character I had adopted at that point. A mere fortnight after I adopted him, Vin and I were sitting at the kitchen table, eating the lovely meal he'd cooked for me as a thankyou, when I heard a sound from out the front. I panicked and froze, but Vincent was on his feet, gun in hand. Slowly, he moved towards the front door, looking like something from a James Bond movie.
Then there was another noise - this time, a man's voice cried out in pain.
Vincent flung open the front door and pointed his gun outside at the dark sky and falling rain...then lowered it and stared at something on the floor. Curious now, I looked over his shoulder to see someone sitting in a puddle on the driveway, clutching his foot. Not too far away, a long sword lay in the same place it had fallen moments before. A shocked gasp escaped my lips as the silver-haired man looked up and scowled at me, complaining that he'd stubbed his toe and it really, really hurt.
Sephiroth.
I couldn't believe it, and went to help him up, full of apologies for my uneven driveway as he leaned on my shoulder and limped into the house, Vincent following with the sword.
I still couldn't believe that Sephiroth had tripped on my driveway, had limped into my house, and was now sitting on my sofa, towel in hand, drying his hair. I asked him what he was doing here, at the same time telling Vincent not to look so suspicious.
Sephiroth told me he'd been to the adoption centre but no-one seemed to want him. He couldn't understand why, but he'd heard someone talking about this girl who'd recently joined the Adopters of Lost Characters Society, who was apparently very nice and had taken Vincent in off the streets without even having him approved by the committee first. So he'd made his way here, and, after a long, tiring journey, had finally made it, even if he had broken his toe when he got here.
He was very polite about it though, and was glad to have finally found a new home. As the conversation turned to why Sephiroth had been in the adoption centre in the first place, Vincent made us all a cup of coffee and we settled down for the tear-jerking tale of how Sephiroth's real mother had died at his birth, and how his adopted mother had turned out to be an evil alien, and that even though he'd told her he didn't mind, she still abandoned him.
So, after the tears and the big hug, I set up the camp bed in the attic and officially adopted him, confiscating his sword before I did so. It wasn't that I didn't trust him, I said when he turned a hurt and indignant expression towards me, it's just one of my rules. No swords allowed in the house, but he could play with it in the garden if he wanted.
Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII
![]() Standing tall, calm and resolute, Sephiroth was the most well-known, feared and respected man on the planet. His skill with the 6ft long Masamune blade combined with his unmatched strength and fighting prowess made him the epitome of Shinra’s elite military group, SOLDIER. However, it was inevitable that, in the end, his mysterious past would catch up with him, and, during a mission to Nibelheim 5 years ago, it did.
Sephiroth was sent to Nibelheim to investigate the Mako reactor there which had been producing monsters. With him were Zack, a younger SOLDIER member, and two escort guards, one of whom was Cloud. On the way to Nibelheim, they were intercepted by a huge dragon-monster. This gave Sephiroth the chance to show off his strength, as he easily destroyed the creature while Zack was too weak to help. Upon reaching Nibelheim, Sephiroth revealed to Zack and Cloud that he had no hometown, that he didn’t know who his father was, and that his mother, who had died giving birth to him, was called Jenova. After spending the night at an inn, he had his photo taken with Zack and Tifa, then led them up to Mt Nibel with Tifa as their guide. However, on the way up to the reactor, a bridge broke, causing them to fall. Consequently, one escort guard died, and they
were forced to take the long way up to the reactor through a series of caves. As they travelled through the caves, they came across a Mako fountain, and Sephiroth used his knowledge of the Ancients to explain to Zack, Tifa and Cloud exactly what the fountain was, at the same time revealing some of what he knew about Hojo – ‘An inexperienced man assigned to take on the work of a great scientist’. Eventually they reached the reactor. Sephiroth ordered Tifa and Cloud to wait outside while he and Zack investigated. Once inside, Sephiroth quickly found the source of the problem – a broken valve which was leaking Mako. However, he was more interested in the strange looking pods containing humans who were being transformed into horrific-looking monsters. He realised that these were part of an experiment being performed by Professor Hojo in an attempt to make him as good as Gast, the previous Head of Shinra’s Biological Department. Sephiroth laughed at what he believed to be a feeble attempt, having great respect for Gast and none for Hojo. But he then noticed a locked door marked ‘Jenova’ – his mother’s name. This caused him to come to the conclusion that he was ‘created’ in the same way as the human-monsters in the pods. After venting his fury, he vanished. Two days later, Zack found Sephiroth in the hidden basement of the Shinra Mansion. This was once Professor Gast’s laboratory and library, containing all Shinra’s secret scientific files. Sephiroth was reading through every single file, desperately trying to find something about Jenova. Eventually he found a file which mentioned the ‘Jenova Project’, but very few details were given. For days, he read constantly, trying to find something to connect him with the Jenova Project. Eventually he did. Professor Gast had discovered a creature buried in the geological stratum of 2000 years ago (in other words, it was buried 2000 years ago). He believed this creature to be an Ancient, a Cetra, and developed the theory that he could create humans with the powers of the Cetra using the cells from this creature, who he named ‘Jenova’. From this information, Sephiroth believed that he was created like this, that he was the son of Jenova. He believed that the Cetra were a race who would travel from planet to planet, settling each planet before moving on. He also believed that at the end of their long journey, they would find the Promised Land, a place of supreme happiness. He believed that ordinary humans were a race who disliked the harsh journey, and stayed on one planet. When the ‘Crisis from the Sky’ came and destroyed the Cetra, humans survived because they hid on the planet. Jenova, his mother, was trapped on the planet. Sephiroth thought that as Jenova was the only Cetra left, she was the ruler of the planet, and, as her son, he was the heir to the planet. In his rage at his mother being trapped in the reactor, he burned down Nibelheim, killing Cloud’s mother. He then headed up to the reactor on Mt Nibel, unaware that Zack and Cloud were following him. Sephiroth reached the reactor but was stopped by Tifa’s father. Sephiroth easily killed the man and headed on towards the Jenova Chamber. Tifa, after seeing her father dead, attempted to get revenge on Sephiroth using his sword which he had left by her father’s body (like he did with President Shinra). But he was much stronger than her and easily took his Masamune back, before cutting her with it. Zack came in and tried to stop Sephiroth, but he entered Jenova’s Chamber. Sephiroth then tried to free Jenova from the metal casing she had been put in so she could be used to incubate her children in the pods. Once again, he was stopped by Zack, but literally threw him out of the chamber. He then proceeded to decapitate Jenova so he could take her to the Promised Land. But, while his back was turned, Cloud appeared and stabbed him from behind, using Zack’s sword. Believing he’d killed Sephiroth, he left the chamber to go and check on Tifa. But Sephiroth was not so easily killed. He followed Cloud out of the chamber to make his way out of the reactor. Again, Cloud tried to stop him, but this time Sephiroth stabbed him. But, while this should have killed him, Cloud found some hidden super-strength and threw Sephiroth over the bridge and into the Mako below. Sephiroth’s body was crystallised in the Mako - this is the real Sephiroth we see in the Whirlwind Maze. The other times Sephiroth appears, it isn’t him, but a Sephiroth-clone. Sephiroth was not the only person to be injected with Jenova cells – others were too, and these are the black-cloaked figures we see in Nibelheim. However, Sephiroth was the most successful ‘product’ of the Jenova Project, as he was injected with the cells before he was born rather than after (see later). He thought that to find the Promised Land meant becoming one with the planet, becoming a God. He knew that when the planet was wounded, it collected all its energy together to try and heal the wound. He also knew, presumably from Jenova, of the Black Materia. This would summon a destructive power so great that all the energy in the planet would be gathered in one place to heal the wound. If he could be at the centre of it, all the energy would flow through him and he would become one with it. And so to get the Black Materia, he forced one of the other Jenova Project specimens to take his form and manipulated him to search for the Black Materia. This is who killed President Shinra, the Midgar Zolom, and is first seen on the Cargo Ship. Think of it as Sephiroth’s mind, but not his real body.Eventually, Sephiroth discovered the Black Materia in the Temple of the Ancients, also discovering the mural room which depicted a meteor flying towards the planet. He told Cloud and the members of his party, exactly how he was planning on taking over the planet, finding the Promised Land. Cloud, with the help of Cait Sith, managed to gain possession of the Black Materia. But, because he too was injected with Jenova cells, Sephiroth eventually managed to manipulate him into handing over the Black Materia – remember he had tried to manipulate Cloud before (the voice in the head) but failed because Cloud was, in fact, a failed experiment.
Sephiroth knew he could now summon Meteor, so started manipulating the clone to take the Black Materia to his real body in the North Crater. However, one thing stood in his way – Aeris and her White Materia. With the White Materia, Holy could be summoned, and Holy was the only magic powerful enough to counter Meteor. Aeris, knowing what Sephiroth planned to do, headed to the Ancient City where she could summon Holy. So Sephiroth diverted his clone to the Ancient City.At the Ancient City, Sephiroth killed Aeris as she knelt at the alter, praying for Holy. With the last ‘real’ Cetra dead and the White Materia lost in deep water, Sephiroth saw his way clear. Now, nothing could stop him from summoning Meteor and becoming a God. Nothing except Cloud.
Sephiroth proceeded to call all the clones to him, so all the cells of Jenova would be in one place. He led Cloud to him not by manipulation, but by literally ‘leading’ him – this is the image Cloud saw of Sephiroth leaving the Ancient City. Sephiroth gave Cloud the Black Materia once he reached the Whirlwind Maze. He did this because he had a personal vendetta against Cloud, and wanted nothing more than for Cloud to be the one to lose his mind and hand over the Black Materia. When Cloud got close to Sephiroth, Sephiroth used the clone to show Cloud his true past, the past Jenova had made him forget. This caused Cloud to lose his mind, in a similar way to how Sephiroth did 5 years ago. In his confused, perhaps insane state, Cloud handed the Black Materia to the real Sephiroth in his Mako crystal. With the Black Materia and all of Jenova’s cells in his possession, Sephiroth started to summon Meteor. With this came a huge explosion which called up the planet’s Weapons – creatures created 2000 years ago by the Cetra to destroy the original ‘Crisis From the Sky’, and also created a huge impenetrable barrier of light round Sephiroth. Sephiroth moved to the very heart of the planet – the best place for gathering the planet’s energy. Although Aeris had managed to summon Holy, from his position in the centre of the planet Sephiroth could stop it from releasing its power. So Sephiroth was safe, Meteor had been summoned, and Cloud had disappeared. It seemed as if Sephiroth’s plan would work. But, of course, it didn’t. Cloud, with the help of Tifa, came back from the Lifestream and proceeded to find a way to get to Sephiroth. Rufus of Shinra destroyed Sephiroth’s barrier, at the cost of his own life, so Cloud could get in to the Crater. Eventually, in the centre of the planet, Cloud found, battled and defeated Sephiroth. With Sephiroth destroyed, Holy was free to destroy Meteor and the planet was saved.![]() But the tragedy of the story isn’t that the planet was nearly destroyed, nor is it the fact that Aeris was killed, pointlessly. It is the fact that Sephiroth was living a lie. He never knew his real parents. Because the truth was, he was not just the product of an experiment – he was the child of Professor Hojo and Lucrecia. Hojo donated his own child to the Jenova Project by injecting him with Jenova Cells while still in his mother’s womb, in an attempt to prove his Reunion Theory (the theory that all the cells of Jenova would attempt to come together where Jenova was stored, which at the time was Nibelheim. But this is only half the reason why this story was so tragic.
Because not only was Jenova not Sephiroth’s mother, she wasn’t even an Ancient. Professor Gast dug up a specimen which he believed was a Cetra, due to the fact that it was found in the geological stratum of 2000 years ago. Thinking he could create people with powers of the Cetra, he injected people with cells extracted from Jenova. These people developed high strength and so became SOLDIER, the elite military group. However, identifying Jenova as a Cetra was a mistake, as Gast found out when he married Ifalna, who really was an Ancient. He found out from her that Jenova was, in fact, the Crisis from the Sky, an alien creature who travelled from planet to planet, killing the life on each planet. She spread a virus throughout the Cetra race, destroying them by turning them into monsters. The few surviving Cetra gathered together to produce Weapons for the planet which could destroy Jenova. However, the Weapons were never needed as the Cetra managed to bury Jenova where she could do no more harm – at least until Gast dug her up 2000 years later. Upon realising his mistake, Gast exiled himself in Icicle, where Aeris was born. However, he couldn’t reverse what he’d done, and couldn’t stop Hojo from continuing his work by producing Sephiroth.
So Jenova was an enemy to the planet and to the Cetra. She was not a Cetra so could never find the Promised Land, so Sephiroth was misguided in thinking he could take her there. Not only that, but Jenova didn’t want to find the Promised Land. She wanted only to cause destruction and death to the planet. Chances are, if Meteor had destroyed the planet, Jenova would have left Sephiroth and continued her journey, finding more vulnerable planets to destroy.
It could be said that Cloud and Sephiroth were, in a way, brothers, both connected by an incessant urge to obey their parent – Jenova. But, while Cloud found the path back to sanity, Sephiroth lost his way. Living a life not his own and following someone else’s bidding, he is the ultimate tragic character.
