Earthdawn Journal is no longer accepting submissions, due to the collapse of the publisher, Sword of the Knight Publications.
Submission Guidelines
Here's FASA's official Writers'
and Artists' Guidelines.
The old Earthdawn Journal Guidelines are here.
We're working on updated submission guidelines and a style guide, but those
-- you guessed it -- aren't ready yet. Watch this space.
How to Submit
Earthdawn Journal can't take
anything, articles or artwork, that has already been posted to a web site,
or otherwise distributed on the Internet or by other electronic means.
We can only take submissions that have not previously been published by
any means. This has to do with copyright issues. Sorry, but we have to
be firm about this.
Format:
-
Articles:
-
We prefer Windows® Corel WordPerfect® or MS Word® formats for
articles, but can handle any PC format. We can also handle Macintosh®
Works 4.0 and Word 3.0 files. If you have to send hardcopy, accompany it
with a diskette. Double-space your printout. Put your name, address and
Social Security Number (if any) in the header, along with a page number
and page count.
-
Artwork:
-
Scan your work at 720 dpi or higher and save it as a 24-bit TIFF® v5.0
(or higher) PC document. Contact us first if you have Macintosh format
graphic files. You can use similar high-resolution formats as long as they're
non-proprietary. Do not use lossy formats such as JPG. If you don't have
access to a scanner, send photostats (not photocopies!) to the surface
mail address below. If you can't get to a photostat machine, include a
self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage for return of your originals.
Any original artwork not accompanied by a return postage envelope becomes
property of Earthdawn Journal, now and forever, worlds without end,
amen.
-
Paper Size:
-
You must format your work for American 8.5*11 inch paper. Articles set
up on A4 we can revise; graphics laid out on A4 we cannot. Your work will
be returned to you, or, if you haven't included return postage, popped
into the recycle bin. Sorry to be hardnosed about this, but Earthdawn
Journal is printed on 8.5*11 paper. You have to write to the audience
and to the printer's specifications.
Release Form:
All submissions must be accompanied by a hardcopy of the release
form. This has to come by surface mail. No, we do not have a Questor
of Dis on our staff.
Sending It In:
In order of preference, here's how to get your work to us:
E-mail:
You can e-mail your work to the editor, Andrew
Ragland, at disturb@ibm.net, as a file attachment.
Surface Mail: You can send your work to us on floppy disk with
accompanying printout. Hardcopy only is acceptable for artwork; text must
have an electronic format accompanying the printout. Mail it to:

What We're Looking For
Here's the category list from the editorial database:
-
Background
-
role-playing source material, stuff the GM can use to flesh out the game
world
-
City/Place
-
Cities, villages, inns, weapon shops, any place that can be visited
-
Con Report
-
reports on conventions where Earthdawn is played and/or promoted
-
Critter
-
beasties and things that go bump in the night
-
Discipline
-
just about maxed out, really don't need new ones unless they're totally
amazing. Revisions of existing Disciplines will be summarily discarded.
-
Encounter
-
less than an adventure - a pregenerated scene that can be plugged into
an existing campaign
-
Errata
-
we get these directly from FASA
-
Fiction
-
short stories, under 15,000 words. No serials.
-
Knack
-
Talent augmentations. See Magic: A Book of Mystic Secrets for explanations
-
Legend
-
a story that the player characters can hear, with some background material
that a GM can develop into an adventure or campaign
-
Magic Item
-
something to blow your silver on
-
Organization
-
guilds, cults, Questor orders, NPC adept groups, whatever
-
Race Expansion
-
material that expands the Denizens books - racial philosophies, views of
the Passions, customs, rituals, etc
-
Rules Discussion
-
dissections or expansions of existing game mechanics. No house rules.
-
Scenario
-
a full-fledged adventure, ready to be run
-
Skill Expansion
-
like a knack, but for a skill. Suggestions on how to roll dice for Research
attempts, for example.
-
Spell
-
obvious...
-
Weapon/Armor
-
likewise
If you can come up with something that doesn't fit the foregoing list,
we'll make a new category. The bottom line is that we're looking for game-ready
material. Earthdawn Journal is a quarterly supplement for Earthdawn.
Articles in it should expand or augment existing campaigns, and provide
ideas for new ones. Earthdawn Journal supports Earthdawn.
Right now we need magic items, spells, NPC groups and artwork. We're
doing okay on fiction and scenarios, but don't let that stop you from sending
them to us. :)
