History of Monaco Bay Weyr
After the dragons were genetically engineered and created, the most violent earthquakes the settlers had ever known errupted across the Southern continent. It was only natural for the settlers to decide to move North, away from the less stable ground of the South and to the harsher climate and solid rock of the Northern continent. However, many people decided to stay behind; they had grown to love their new homes on the Southern continent and refused to leave. Among those who stayed were two goldriders, several bronzeriders, and a large group of brown, blue, and greenriders. Several craft people and basic residents also stayed behind. Fort Weyr was founded in the North, and in the South, Monaco Bay Weyr was created. Soon, North and South lost contact; it did no good to keep in touch since help was not needed to combat the Pass over the Southern continent; Monaco Bay Weyr could protect its interests well enough without other dragons. After the Pass, Monaco Bay became overcrowded; too many queens were being clutched and too many lesser colors were being Impressed. Monaco Bay's Weyrleaders decided to found a new Weyr, and so Golden Dawn Weyr (NPC) was born. During the interval, several holds and halls sprang up in the area surrounding Monaco Bay Weyr. Wyvarn Hold was the main Hold in the area; it had been named for the Weyrleader of Monaco Bay, who had died an untimely death in the founding of Golden Dawn. A HarperHall was founded in the area of Wyvarn Hold. Outside of Wyvarn Hold grew Silver Song Hold, and the Healer Craft Hall was created. However, the unexpected soon happened as the dragon population began to decline. Fewer queens meant fewer dragons, which meant sparsely populated Weyrs and dissatisfied Holders; dragons meant safety and protection, anda shortage there of meant danger. The leaders of the Weyrs coped with it, but they were not pleased. More time passed, and the second pass was drawing near. The Weyrwoman of Monaco Bay Weyr was the only queen left in the Weyr, and Golden Dawn could spare no queens for their sister Weyr. Everyone wished that Weyrwoman Yarat's golden Nariyath would clutch a queen egg, and their hopes were answered when a glimmering queen was indeed lain. With baited breath, everyone watched the hatching as the little queen took her time in choosing, going from young girl to young girl, and finally Impressing the shy beauty Xylathera. Monaco Bay now had a second queen, Mynervath, and everyone breathed a little easier; Thread was due to fall in less than a turn. However, things would get no easier for the Weyr. Queenrider Yarat was severely injured during the anual Games, and Nariyath suicided from the shock. As a result, her rider died. The people again became tense and nervous; the only queen at Monaco Bay Weyr was aWeyrling, never flown, ridden by a girl with no training. Xylathera, however, was not to be dissuaded. She knew there had to be an answer, somewhere, somehow, and so she began to scour therecords for something that might help. With the help of several bronzeriders, she located a reference in ancient texts to the move North. Surprised, they read on, and learned of Fort Weyr. Without having to say a thing, the bronzeriders went outside, mounted their dragons, and headed for Fort Weyr, going off of the obscure references they had. By fate or by luck, they somehow arrived safely. Fort Weyr was shocked at the sight of three unknown bronzeriders at their Weyr, and theWeyrwoman listened with compassion. After speaking with the other Weyrleaders, it was decided that two queens would go south to help,as well as any other dragonriders who wished to loan their aid. Several hundred ended up returning south with the bronzeriders, including queenriders Caillean, rider of golden Moriath, and Mekare, rider of golden Aurynth. Caillean's Moriath was the first to be flown, by bronze Shyveth and his rider, T'len. It was decided that she would be the Weyrwoman. However, tensions are strong and rising at Monaco Bay. The Southerners are untrusting of their Northern allies, and they dislike having Northerners lead their Weyr. The Northerners are pleased with the leadership and trust Caillean ultimately. North/South tensions arehard to contain, and the Weyr is being torn apart. But Thread has started to Fall, and no one quite knows who to trust....
