The Groggighatten Defenders themselves!
Alec Morgan, Lewis Maddoc and Kate Tank initially formed the Grogginghatten Defenders sometime in March of 200X (somewhere in the Not Too Distant Future). The three of them had somehow contrived superpowers through a variety of amusing accidents. Alec had an unfortunate run in with an experimental particle accelerator and a non-dairy creamer. A radioactive Kimodo dragon had bitten Lewis. Kate... well, she's a little vague on her origins (then again, she's a little vague most of the time) but it seems that her mother took some funny substances.
Aaaaanyway... The three of them formed a superhero group to fight crime, do good, put their powers to use and most importantly, get famous from it. (A disgruntled ex-girlfriend with ice powers may have also influenced Alec's decision.) In their very first adventure, they ended up going up against The Villain Formerly Known As Dr Destructo, formerly one of the world's most powerful supervillains. (But now reduced to knocking over Quick-E-Marts for a living while plotting to take over the world.) They also realised one thing; if they were going to be recognised as a formal superhero group by the Department of Superhuman Relations (not to mention the press) they would need a fourth team member. A name would also help.
After rejecting various applicants such as Statue Man, Nerdman, The Masked Ballerina, Politically Correct Person, Bob the Plumber and Captain Redneck, the group hired The Mystic Ninja, and finally were whole. On their very next adventure, they got considerable media coverage, as well as a name: The Defenders.
Since then, things have been looking up for the Defenders. Along the way, they've made enemies out of some of the most powerful people and organisations on the planet, are enemies of the state in a South-East Asian nation, traveled to an alternate dimension where they fought their evil (and badly-dressed) counterparts and earned the eternal loathing of another one of Grogginhatten's superhero teams, but hey. They also got their DoSR recognition, so things are going well for them. They've even got their own secret base, complete with crime computer! How cool is that?
