Story
When Barret first appears on the screen
you'd be forgiven for thinking you were watching an episode of
the A-Team - not only does he look uncannily like Mr T,
he's even got the same "The hell you talkin' 'bout,
fool?" tough-talking attitude. But, as with many of the
characters in FFVII, his hard exterior is just a front,
a way of coping with the destitution and destruction brought
about by Shinra. He lost his wife to Shinra many years ago, and
he is now devoted to putting a stop to the evil corporation,
forming the revolutionary group AVALANCHE to this end. His
daughter, Marlene, is his pride and joy, and he often regrets
having to entrust her care to others as he and his rebel team
battle against the mega-conglomerate and its life-sapping
reactors.
Fighting style
Since all of Barret's attacks revolve around his gun-arm and the many attachments that can be bolted onto it, you'd think that he would be an ideal back-row fighter, but actually he's better suited to the front line. He's built like the back end of a truck, so he doesn't need to cower behind Cloud when it comes to taking blows - so much so, in fact, that you might want to consider equipping him with a Cover Materia and using him as a "damage magnet" to protect weaker allies. Also, a surprising number of his more powerful weapons are actually close-range, such as the Atomic Scissors and Chainsaw, so putting him in the back row lessens the damage he can do. Don't give Barret too much Materia - a few orbs won't do any harm, but you don't want to weaken his powerful frame by loading him with Summons and making him into a magic user.
Barret's Limit Breaks
Level 1: Big Shot - Barret blasts one
opponent with a huge ball of energy from his gun-arm, often
eliminating enemies completely in the first portion of the game.
Level 1: Mindblow - Though this doesn't actually cause any damage
to an enemy, it does drain it of a large amount of MP. Best used
against bosses.
Level 2: Grenade Bomb - A powerful Limit which can take out an
entire group of enemies. Once you've got this, you won't need Big
Shot any more. This tends to be the best of Barret's Level 2
Limits.
Level 2: Hammerblow - Barret uppercuts an enemy into the
stratosphere! Unlike Cloud's Finishing Touch, this can only be
used against a single enemy, and it doesn't inflict damage if the
enemy falls back to the ground. If you're facing a single
opponent in a normal fight, then use this; in a boss fight, or
against a group, go for the Grenade Bomb.
Level 3: Satellite Beam - Barret calls for assistance from above,
sending targeted laser beams raining forth from the skies. (How
does he do it?) Unfortunately, this doesn't cause any more damage
to an enemy on its own than it does to a creature in a group
(unlike, for example, Cloud's Meteorain Limit), so it's best used to take out clusters of baddies.
Level 3: Ungarmax/Angermax - Barret goes absolutely berserk and unloads huge amounts of lead into his enemies! Unlike the Satellite Beam, this is more effective against one enemy than a group, so use this for lone creatures and bosses.
Level 4: Catastrophe - Barret uses his gun-arm to launch himself high into the air, then lets rip with an intense laser blast that does tons of damage! One of the most awesome-looking Limits in the game.
