Story
Cid isn't exactly a great role model for young gamesplayers - he's never without a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, he has a semi-naked woman painted on the side of his airship and he's always ready to let a barrage of expletives fly at the first opportunity. We love him, he's great! Cid's sole ambition is to be the first man in space, and he would do anything to achieve it - much to the chagrin of his long-suffering partner, Shera. He would have achieved his dream, but he was forced to abort the launch of his prized rocket, the Shinra No. 26, in order to save Shera's life when she became trapped during last-minute adjustments. He still blames her for ruining his chances of becoming an astronaut, and treats her rather badly, but deep down the hard-bitten old pilot has a kind heart.
Fighting style
Cid is a general all-rounder, neither especially strong nor especially weak in any department. His favoured weapon, the lance, restricts him to close-range fighting and therefore a front-row position, though he's also a decent enough magic user. Like Red XIII, he's best suited to a mixture of regular attacks and offensive magic. While his averageness may put you off using him, at one point in the game you're forced to assign him to the role of party leader in Cloud's absence, so it's worth having him built up to a decent level and becoming familiar with his fighting style early on.
Cid's Limit Breaks
Level 1: Boost Jump - Cid does a Braver, leaping high into the air above a single enemy and bringing the point of his spear crashing down into its skull. Oogh!
Level 1: Dynamite - Cid pulls a stick of dynamite from his asbestos-lined pockets and lobs it into the enemy lines, causing damage to all.
Level 2: Hyper Jump - An impressive-looking Limit which works like the Boost Jump, but damages all enemies. This is one of those Limits that works better against a group of enemies than against a creature on its own.
Level 2: Dragon - Cid summons this ancient beast to drain one of his enemies of its life forces, giving his HP and MP levels a little boost in the process, rather like Red XIII's Blood Fang Limit.
Level 3: Dragon Dive - Cid leaps down onto each of his enemies, causing the ground to explode beneath their feet (or claws, or tentacles, e.t.c.) as he does so! A powerful Limit which, yes, you know what I'm going to say, is best used against a group of creatures if you want to get the most damage-for-anger out of it.
Level 3: Big Brawl - Cid practices the noble art of what lager louts hanging around outside pub toilets call "havin' a scrap", pulverizing his enemies Omnislash-style. Similar to Cloud's Limit, but obviously, being a Level 3, doesn't cause as much damage.
Level 4: Highwind - Cid without his airship would be like Yuffie without Materia, so it doesn't come as a great shock that for his ultimate Limit, he calls on his beloved Highwind to flambé the enemy collective. Like Barret's Catastrophe, this hits loads of times against all enemies present, and works great against both groups and troublesome bosses.
