Story
Red XIII - or Nanaki, to use his real name - is a strange
creature indeed, a flame-furred beast of indeterminate species
with incredible intellect, a lifespan of 500 years or so and a
liking for adorning his auburn mane with hairgrips. (And has
anyone ever noticed how the feathers in his hair and the warpaint
on his face make him look not entirely unlike the Sprite from
Secret Of Mana? Hmm...) AVALANCHE first encounter him in the
laboratory of the sinister Hojo, who has some altogether
unsavoury plans for Red and Aeris. (Eeeurgh! Disgusting!)
Thankfully, Red doesn't like the idea much either, but he does
agree to sign up with AVALANCHE and join them in their fight. His
ferocious fighting style coupled with his startling intelligence
make him a formidable ally in the many battles that will follow.
Fighting style
Somewhat surprisingly, Red is one of the game's most balanced fighters. He's incredibly powerful when it comes to close-range combat, yet his extraordinary intelligence makes him an excellent Materia user too. As with Cloud and Tifa, sticking Red in the back row weakens him severely, as many of his Limit Breaks revolve around tooth-and-claw attacks. He's got decent HP levels, so you can afford to take advantage of his skill with Materia and assign some of the more powerful spells and Summons to him - but always remember that he is, first and foremost, a fighter, so treat him as such. Keep him in the front row alongside Cloud and alternate between his lethal slash attacks and a concoction of magic.
Red XIII's Limit Breaks
Level 1: Sled Fang - A crushing bodyblow that, for the early
parts of the game, is one of the team's most powerful attacks.
Level 1: Lunatic High - Casts the Haste spell on your entire
party. If you're facing a single opponent, you're probably better
off with Sled Fang; otherwise go with this.
Level 2: Blood Fang - as you might expect, this attack is very
similar to Sled Fang, but it's more powerful and also drains its
victim of a small amount of HP and MP.
Level 2: Stardust Ray - An incredible attack that inflicts loads
of damage, and unlike Blood Fang it can be used against either a
single enemy or a group. Until you get Earth Rave, this is
probably the best Limit that Red XIII has.
Level 3: Howling Moon - Casts Berserk and Haste on Red XIII. This
can often do more harm than good, as while Red is under the
influence of this Limit he can only use his standard attack.
Stick with the Stardust Ray instead. (Note that if Red is wearing a Ribbon or Peace Ring accessory, the Berserk will be cancelled out - something to note if you're trying to build up Red's Limits but still want him to use magic or summons in battle.)
Level 3: Earth Rave - Searing flame spews forth from deep within the Planet, causing around 4000-5000 points of damage with each fiery blast for a total of five such hits. Effective against either a group or a single creature.
Level 4: Cosmo Memory - Red's howl summons an immense ball of magma that engulfs all enemies present, causing up to 9999 points of damage on each creature.
