Science Fact
Ancient Civilizations
~ The First Americans ~
Native Americans take their myths and legends very seriously.
Many are said to go back to an era that was over a million years ago.
In the west, the entire Anasazi nation vanished one day, a very long time ago,
without a trace ~ their name means "Ancient Aliens" to the Hopi and Navajo tribes.
In the east, the Mississippian culture built many massive earth mounds and temples
that resemble pyramids ~ but where did they get the idea to build such a thing ?
In Mexico there were the Aztecs, and in Central and South America the Inca,
but their astounding monuments were left by the Maya, or "Old Ones" !

The Mayans
lived in the Americas
many thousands of years ago
but we know so precious little about them.
They came long before the Aztec and Inca peoples
who the Spanish encountered when arriving in the New World.
The word Maya is actually of Aztec origin and simply means, "Old Ones"
or "those who came before." They built the pyramids of America as well as many
other monuments laid out in cities, very reminiscent of the architecture found at Giza, in Egypt.
The Aztec and Inca are probably the most famous of all the ancient peoples
that reigned in the old New World ~ and they built many impressive cities too.
Or did they just take them over after the original builders, the Maya, had gone ?
But there were other people living in the New World so long ago.
In Arizona, the Anasazi (a Hopi and Navajo for "Ancient Aliens")
for all their greatness, simply disappeared one day without a trace,
thus perhaps returning to the sky from whence they originally came.
The Mississippians, who became what we know of today
as the Cherokee (and other tribes of Southeast America),
also built pyramid mounds ~ though of much less prowess,
more like an imitation temple than an astronomical calandar.
Could these mysterious peoples have known of each other ?
Maybe they were even different branches of the same group
perhaps colonies or outposts of what we today call Atlantis !

Internal cliff castles of Mesa Verde
is someplace
Mesa Verde and Tonto National Monument in Arizona
and he remote Horseshoe Canyon in Utah where there are
pictoglyphs reminiscent of ghosts, angels or even aliens
perhaps drawn by "squatters" long after the Anasazi left.

| Balcony House
Mesa Verde is hard to date. Built inside the cliff face hundreds of feet above the canyon floor,
and virtually inaccesable, it is free of both wind and rain erosion, and so has remained in excellent condition.
We have very little (besides sites like these) to go by when investigating the elusive Anasazi,
who seem to have mysteriously disappeared on day. Could they have been related to the Maya, an outpost perhaps ?
Because of the elevated nature of the finds, it has been suggested that they were afraid of something.
Could it have been making contact with the savage, barbarous native primitives ?

| Mayan Solar Legacy
The Mayan Holy Number 1,366,560 days, known as "The Birth of Venus" and the basis of their calendar,
indicates their ancient and advanced knowledge of sun spot cycles and their effect on the Human race.
The myth of Quetzalcoatl (described as a tall, bearded, caucasian man with several short servants)
who taught them Agriculture and Astronomy, tells of origins in Maya ideas concerning the sun cycle.

Pyramids of the Sun and Moon
Plaza of the Three Cultures, in Mexico City
From the central highlands, to the Pacific Coast, the
Yucatan Peninsula, a myriad of advanced cultures left their mark
on Mexico-- long before the Europeans stopped thinking the world was flat.
Many of their cities, temples, ball fields and streets are still intact.
So with all the wonderful archaeological sites that decorate Mexico,
it might be easy to think this is a land that time forgot, But the truth is,
this is a land where times long past are still remembered, And still add
to the vitality and richness of this wonderful country.
At the center of Mexico today is Mexico City.
But before that, Tenochtitlan was once the center
of the Aztec world. Their "floating city," built on a lake
and surrounded by canals, covered most of today's Mexico City.
In Xochimilco, south of the city, they continue to grow
floating gardens reminiscent of ancient times.
In the city itself, the Main Temple still stands.
And the Plaza of the Three Cultures, built on the site
of the Aztec's most important marketplace, is an impressive
testimonial to Mexico's ancient, colonial and contemporary history.
Pyramid of the Sun, Teotihucan
Teotihuacan has been called
the most magnificent pre-Hispanic city in Mexico.
Here, the Toltecs built the great Pyramid of the Sun,
along with astounding palaces, smaller pyramids and other ceremonial buildings.
In Tula, another Toltec site, you can see the famous "Atlantes" stone warriors.
And in Cholula stands the largest pyramid in the world, covering 46 acres.
Hundreds of additional churches or prayer sites called "nichos" were built
directly on top of Toltec pyramids. Smaller pyramids and mural-covered
walls in Cacaxtla dramatically tell the story of their culture.
In Oaxaca, on a bluff overlooking a valley, lies Monte Albán.
An arrowshaped building, thought to be an observatory, stands beside
strangely carved figures of stone dancers. Nearby Mitla, with its geometric
mosaics depicting symbolic snakes, was a ceremonial center for the Mixtecs and Zapotecs

Moving to the southeast,
the influence of the Mayans becomes more predominant.
5,000 years ago, they ruled over vast portions of the Yucatan Peninsula,
and today their cities ~ many are so well-preserved you can't really call them ruins
~ are stirring reminders of this advanced civilization.

The Palace, in Palanque by Luis Fernando Oviedo
At the edge of the Sierra de Chiapas rain forest,
Palenque is one of the most mysterious remnants
of the Mayan culture. Here, you can see the Temple
of the Inscriptions, built to mark the winter solstice.
Numerous burial chambers and tombs have also been found here,
including one of a man called "The Astronaut" that some think came
from outer space due to the carvings on the sarcophagus. And in nearby
Bonampak, the magnificent frescoes depict the victory of the Mayans over the Olmecs,

In Uxmal stands the Pyramid of the Magician, supposedly built overnight.
Nearby, the sites of Xlapák, Labná and Kabáh have buildings
covered with delicate mosaics and small wells to hold oil.
At night they were lit to create a network of light across the hills.

Uxmal
Avid astronomers, the Mayans' site of Chichen Itzá was a center for this science.
The pyramid of Kukulcán is famous for the shadow of the serpent Quetzalcóatl,
which it makes when the Sun is at the equinox each September 21st.
The snake seems to crawl slowly down the pyramid's steps.
Here, you'll also find the Palace of Columns. The Caracol observatory.
and The Ball Court, where the losers of the games were sacrificed to the gods.

On a bluff overlooking the Caribbean, Tulum
is the only known pre-Columbian sea fortress.
This site, said to be the home of the Mayan's "Descending
God," served as a nautical reference point for Mayan sailors.
Other lookouts can be seen up and down the coast,
induding ones at Xcaret and Playa del Carmen.

At La Venta near Villahermosa, the Olmecs, another
advanced Mesoamerican civilization, left behind massive,
dark-colored stone heads weighing up to 20 tons.
The Olmecs are thought to have developed
the first written language in the New World.
The Parque La Venta, an outdoor museum,
displays these and other Olmec artifacts.

Today, over 2 million descendants of the Mayans live in Mexico and Central America
and descendants of the other originals Mexicans live throughout the country.
So even though the inhabitants of these magnificent archaeological sites
may be gone, they live on --as so many things do-- in the Mexico of today,

Volcano Popocatepetl
Mexico is a country of volcanos.
The undoubted king of all these volcanos is
El Popocatepetl , situated between Mexico city and Puebla.
With a height of 5600 meter, the volcanic top is easily seen from both the cities.
These days Popo is a constant newsmaker, following a couple of eruptions and ash-rains !
