A hummingbird, a spider and a monkey
a lizard, a whale, a Thunderbird and an Astronaut
sit beside geometric designs and landing strip like shapes
all made from a single line cleared in the ancient volcanic rubble.
And these shapes are staring at the sky for only the airborne to see !
Is this perhaps all we have left of an ancient airport ~ or spaceport ?
The Nazca Plateau is one of the highest and dryest places on Earth
and would probably make the perfect location for such a terminal,
or it could be that this is the only one to have survived the ages.
The primitive people who inhabit this place
have credited the Viracochas with the artwork
(that surprisingly correspond to many major stars),
and the geometric diagrams and acute right triangles
that track the constellations' precession across the sky
tracing their paths through the millennia and back again.
~ The Nazca Plateau ~
Where Human History Touches the Sky !
Perhaps this century's most amazing tangible discovery
and our contribution to science is a freeway running through it !
| Lines in the Sand
The mysterious Nazca Lines, viewable only from high in the air, were drawn into the valley floor,
perhaps many millennia ago, by people who had at least learned how to fly, if not voyage into orbit or even outer space.
The designs range from abstract shapes, runway like trapezoids and long, narrow triangles to colossal images of various animals
including 18 different kinds of birds, a monkey, a spider, a whale, fish, lizards
(some of which have been found to conform to various bright and familiar constellations)
~ and a curious figure known as "The Astronaut" which really resembles little else.
So although proper perspective could have been obtained from less technological devices,
like a hang glider or a hot air balloon, the original artists had to have known what a space suit is.

Modern Science to the Rescue
Maria Reiche, the German mathematician famous for having studied the lines,
felt it was unlikely that the runways were used by extraterrestrials."I'm afraid the spacemen would have gotten stuck," she said.
She devoted almost her entire life to the investigation and analysis of the Nazca Lines (living there almost continuously
from before World War II until her death just a few years ago), and was instrumental in the early research.
Ironically, no one knew what to make of the Astronaut figure, until she was an old woman, and Humans began to make their way out into space again.
A local legend, there are memorials of her in Lima, Peru (she even has an airport named after her)
~ and the Peruvian government has begun to take serious financial (tourism), if not historical, interest in the site.
Today there is a guard posted, and a one million dollar fine imposed for any vandalism of the lines.

Behind the Stoney Ages
Someone, long ago, moved countless billions of rocks to make these shapes,
many of which are of legendary god like creatures that are revered by native peoples even today.
We can only imagine what they meant to the ancient artists from the legends that have survived.
But now that we've been "baptized" by science, how do we know who really drew them, or why ~ and how long ago ?
| ||
|
Embedded within some of the shapes are shards of ancient Nazcan pottery, which carbon date to between 350 BC and 600 AD.
(so although the placement of the stones themselves cannot yet be dated, we can be sure they are at least 1400 years old),
and no one in the world had the ability to fly in that era of history. So let us assume that the pottery came later ~ perhaps much later !
The markings on the desert floor were created in at least two separate phases. "The Animal Phase" is assumed to have been the first because many of these pictograms are obscured, or drawn over, by the other more linear markings. attributed to "The Runway Phase" consisting of wide triangles and long flat paths reminiscent of landing strips. Admittedly, the glyphs in this phase may not have required as much skill to render, but airborne appreciation and perspective are still required. It may certainly have been very necessarry for a civilization (like Atlantis) trying to recover from a major global catastrophy to build and maintain isolated airstrips like this, in order to escape a doomed planet, or receive refugees from other bases or colonies, like Mars. Although the soil beneath the rocks is now too soft to provide a comfortable landing for modern aircraft we do not know how long this has been so. |

The Perfect Canvas
Thousands of years ago, Nazca was very much like it is now, drawings and all.
The geology, meteorology and physics of the Nazca Plateau are ideal for the indefinite preservation of such art.
With an annual rainfall of less than one centimeter per decade, it is one of the dryest places on the planet
~ and a thin layer of volcanic ash covers everything in sight from one mountain range to the other.
There is some wind, but the pebbles absorb and retain the sun's heat, throwing up "a protective force field of warm air." And the soil contains
enough gypsum to glue small stones to the subsurface, "an adhesive regularly renewed by the moistening effects of early morning dews."
So the Nazca Lines are ancient in the extreme, the dust proves it !
| ||
Parrot on a Hill |
Beneath the black volcanic pebbles is the desert's paler base of yellow sand and clay,
in stark contrast when exposed to view ~ almost as if an SOS were etched by marooned space travelers
hoping to be rescued by anyone who might happen to see their desperate signals from the sky.
Any metal or wooden structures on these lines, put up even as late as just a few thousand years ago, would have long since been turned to dust.
| |
|
Dry Expressions
Nazca has billions of rocks ranging from pebble size to almost too big to budge.
But long ago, someone moved an amazing number of them, thereby forming many single straight and curving lines (over hill and over dale),
to depict complex and sometimes comical shapes, (the whale, monkey and astronaut seem to be smiling),
so large that they can only be seen from at least 1000 feet off the ground.
The pictoglyphs are drawn from a single unbroken line, suggesting a number of different theories. One is that they were meditation paths, like those used by ancient Druids and Hindus (but if they had been tread upon to any major extent, the evidence for that would be plain, and it is not). Another is that the stones were cleared to make way for troughs to be filled with flamable liquids, that could be individually lit up in seconds, and when ignited would have shone bright enough to be seen from high altitudes or even from space. So maybe the lines are just "what is left" of a more elaborate system that has long since turned to dust, or maybe when they were rescued, they took whatever is missing with them. |

Missing Evidence
In the absence of hard data answers, more questions seem to arise out of the desert sands.
But as interesting as it may be, this just isn't a top anthropological priority, so studies will have to wait until the questions answer themselves.
Even a non scientist, when given enough thought to the subject, is posed with curious voids of information about Nazca.
Like, why is Nazca the only place even in South America where things like this are found, and what happened to the rocks that are missing ?
| ||
The Toad |
There isn't a thicker distribution of pebbles immediately adjacent to the cleared paths in any of the drawings, in either phase.
In fact, except for the fact that the volcanic rubble came from eruptions millions of years ago, and were probably evenly distributed,
there is no evidence that the missing rocks ever existed. So, what could have happened to them
~ were they taken somewhere, or did some mysterious force (like in Crop Circles) magically alter the landscape ?

| An Eternity to Enlightenment
These may seem like kooky theories to some, and archaeology is loath to speculate beyond accepted timelines
(especially where Atlantis or space travellers are concerned, even at the Nazca site), but when a place like Nazca is discovered
"accepted timelines" are either rewritten, or that area of science goes plundering on, stumbling in its own ignorance.
When Archaeology and Anthropology do compare notes, it is found to be one of the more important finds in history. If one section of rocks had been moved in the last few hunderd years it would stand out like a neon sign. So everything except the new road, the Pan American Highway, is exactly as it has been for millennia. |

Antlantean Astrology
The problem with connecting these glyphs to familiar constellations is that we have no way of knowing
what a long vanished culture might have seen in the stars even though the stars stay the same, shifting in the sky only a little bit over millennia.
For example, their Aquarius was most likely not envisioned as a water bearer, and Orion could well have been a Spider. But we can still connect the dots.
If there is any sense of equal scale, the investigation should be that much easier (assuming that the glyphs are drawn from Earth's perspective).
The Orion Spider is 150 feet long, the hummingbird is 165 feet long,
the lizard is 617 feet long ~ and the pelican and condor are each over 400 feet long.

The Orion Spider
One of the more famous, and certainly the most recognizable designs,
is also perhaps the best clue we have to unlocking the secrets of the lines.
Dr. Phillis Pitluga, of Chicago's Adler Planetarium, states that
"the famous spider figure was devised as a terrestrial diagram of the giant constellation of Orion."
A "winter constellation," Orion is perhaps the most famous of all star groupings, hosting the bright stars Rigel and Betelgeuse.
This is not the first time something left by ancient peoples was connected to this bright and familiar constellation, (the three Giza Pyramids in Egypt correspond to Orion's Belt). This part of our galaxy, the Orion Arm, is named for this very familiar constellation (which happens to look pretty much the same from most perspectives for hundreds of light years around in all directions). Because of its location, and the brightness of the principal stars, this configuration would be recognizable to many nearby alien civilizations. It is also well within the realms of cryptozoological speculation that spiders may be even more superfluous than humanoids in this area of space. |

Near the Orion Spider, curious right triangles
may actually track the constellation's precession across the sky over the Millennia and back again.
There are many such otherwise anomolous geometric figures adjacent to animal pictograms throughout the site.
Investigations are currently underway, as only now are we just starting to learn of this feature of Astronomy, unique to our Solar-System.

The Orion Spider |
Professor Gerald S. Hawkins, in his book Beyond Stonehenge first made the connection and provided hard evidence that
the giant diagram accurately depicts one of the rarest spiders in the world, Ricinulei, which is only found in the Amazon rain forests of Brazil
nearly 1000 miles away from the Nazca plateau, over the Andes, and through one of the more inaccessible and inhospitable parts of South America.
The elongated leg is his microcsopic but anatomically correct member, (as is also shown on some of the other creatures featured).
So small is this creature, that in order for it to be depicted so realistically the artist must have the magnification power of a modern microscope,
(as well as the ability to project that depiction on such a huge scale).

| The Cygnus Thunderbird
This monsterous glyph strongly resembles the constellation Cygnus (the Swan), which contains the bright binary star
Albireo and nearby Deneb which is one third of The Summer Triangle (the other two being Vega and Altair).
Native American Mythology is filled with references to this giant deity. But if something like that were seen flying around the skies
today, many of us might perhaps mistake it for a jumbo jet. Could this massive depiction represent some ancient form of Aircraft ?

"Thunderbird" | |
|
Even if it were Human beings that were seen to emerge from such giant craft, before a primitive tribal culture,
they would definately have been assumed to be gods. In fact, they couldn't have been taken for anyhting else.
Anthropology often comes across staggering hints of Ancient Astronauts in its quest to find the earliest signs of Mankind,
our ancestors, here on Earth ~ but the real answers could be too much for some to handle.
If Man were flying through Earth's ancient skies, and even Outer Space and to other planets long ago, it would certainly explain
a great many things: such as Cydonia and the Face on Mars, giant Pyramids from all over the world being astronomically aligned,
and ancient cultures from the Maya to the Egyptians suddenly appearing fully developed, almost overnight.
Atlantis is supposed to have developed many technologies that we've only begun to invent for ourselves in this century, flight among them.
Or they could have brought them from someplace else beyond the clouds. Could we be looking at an antedeluvian depiction of an Atlantean Space Shuttle ?

| Righteous Gods of the Sky
The local legends are that these are all the work of the Viracochas, strange and wise bearded men
with pale faces, who very long ago came from a distant land, or the sky, and emparted their great wisdom, then left by the sea.
This legend is prevalent throughout many different cultures of Central and South America, though the names are changed.
And it makes sense ~ much of the technology that the Inca and Aztec people possessed appears fully developed and seemingly out of nowhere, just like the Egyptians.
The Viracochas taught the Incans mathematics, economics, agriculture, medicine, engineering, astronomy
and a civilized system of justice and law reminiscent of ancient Greece (on the other side of the world).
In the end however, they found they couldn't tame the primitive tribal people of the American jungles, but vowed they would return again someday.
The date predicted by ancient Inca sun calandars is the exact day that Cortez and his men first set foot in the New World !

Ancient Astronauts
This is how the Nazca Valley floor looked to the first airplane that flew over it in the early 1920s,
and pretty much how it has looked from the air for quite possibly many thousands of years before ~ like an airport with dozens of landing strips, (below left).
Only an airplane requires such a long flat surface to take off or land, and the Nazca Plateau is coincidentally one of
the few places in that part of South America vast enough and flat enough to accommodate such a large facility of this kind.
| ||
An Ancient Landing Strip |
In Mexico, there is an 8 foot diameter head,
with African features, proving that trans continental contact did occur before recorded historical expeditions.
Coincindentally, the Dogon tribe of Africa received their anomolous astronomical knowledge supposedly from an Amphibian King sent from the stars.
They also knew that Sirius was a double star, centuries before that fact was verified by modern astronomers.
Their creation myths make reference to a star (that was the first star made by the Gods and was the axis of the Universe)
and even had a map of its orbit long before the star was even discovered ~ so far the map has proven accurate enough.
Thoughtful consideration assumes that if Ancient Astronauts were from such a place, this star would be in the center of their maps.

An Atlantean Outpost
Nazca is also isolated enough to provide discrete airport facilities to anyone who wanted to avoid contact with primitive tribal cultures.
The Viracochas could come and go as they pleased, to and from any port in the world, or even bases on the moon or Mars.
A civilization like Atlantis may well have had a space faring technology similar to our space shuttles, with bases within this solar system.
Evidence of a settlement in the Cydonia region of Mars, and the many pyramids around the world
which exibit qualities that only an advanced culture could possibly have implimented, or would need to,
certainly suggest the possibility that these Ancient Astronauts, the Viracochas, had astronomical expertise
that would be considered astounding even today.
The yellow sand and clay desert floor is too soft a surface to set an airplane's landing gear on. but we don't know if this was always so. Current models of the Atlantean colonization of South America predate reliable estimates of geological conditions in such a region. Maybe the material that the original strips were made of turned to dust long ago, or maybe their airplanes just needed a flat, non-rocky surface to float or hover over (many legendary feats would require knowledge of superconductivity). In any case, the runway shapes obscure some of the single line animal pictograms indicating that this desert was probably an observatory first, before it became an airport. |
