Long considered a sacred site by local Druids,
these massive stone monoliths are three stories high
and arranged in a circle to form a perfect solar calandar,
many with equally impressive blocks placed on top of them !
Having accurately marked the passage of time for centuries,
each gigantic "garage sized" block weighs in at many tons.
Now almost in complete ruins ~ who built this, and why ?

The "classic" view from the center of the sarsen circle
~ looking northeast towards the outlying Heel Stone (center);
the large stones with the lintels are sarsens (belonging to Phase III),
and the shorter standing stones in front of them are the blue stones;
the central gap in the sarsen uprights frame the Midsummer Sunrise,
and the gaps on either side frame the Lunar events
as viewed from the center position.
