In honor of the tragedy of September 11, 2001, I designed this "American Heart Square".  You may print out as many as you like for your personal use. Please do not post it on any web site without my permission. I hope you enjoy it.

Materials: Red, White and Blue worsted weight yarn; Hook sizes F & G.

Finished size: 7" square
FOR THE HEART
1st Lobe:
With Red Yarn and F Hook, ch 2,
Row 1: Sc in 2nd chain from hook; ch 1, turn.

Row 2: 2 sc in first sc; ch 1, turn.

Row 3: 2 sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn.

Row 4: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in the last sc; ch 1, turn.
Row 5: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each of the next 4 sc, 2 sc in last sc; ch 1, turn
Row 6: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in last sc; ch 1, turn. (10 sc)

Row 7: Sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn.

Row 8: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each of next 8 sc, 2 sc in last sc; ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Sc in each sc across; ch 1, turn (12 sc)
ch 1, turn.

Row 10: Decrease in next 2 sc, sc in the next 4 sc, (leave remaining scs unworked); ch 1, turn.

Row 11: Decrease in next 2 sc, sc in next 3 sc, ch 1, turn.

Row 12: Decrease in next 2 sc, 2 times.
End off.

2nd Lobe of Heart:
Row 10: With right side facing, attach Red yarn with a sc in the next sc (after finishing Row 12 of the 1st Lobe).   Sc in next 3 sc (there are now 4 sc, counting the attached sc),  Decrease in next 2 sc; ch 1, turn. (5 sc)

Row 11: Sc in the next 3 sc, decrease in next 2 sc; ch 1, turn. (4 sc)

Row 12: Decrease in the next 2 sc, twice, do not turn, do not end off.

EDGING:
Row 1: Continuing with Red, ch 1, work sc around entire Heart, pulling tightly and checking to keep it flat and even. Join with sl st to first sc, end off.

Row 2: Attach White yarn to any sc, ch 2, sc in same sc and continue making sc around Heart; join with sl st to first sc, end off.
Weave in all ends.
THE SQUARE
With Blue yarn and G hook, ch 6; join to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 11 dc in ring; join to beg. ch-3. (12)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same chain; work 2 dc in each dc around;  join in 3rd ch of ch-3. (24)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, in the same chain work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) [beg. corner made];  * dc in the next dc, hdc in the next 3 dc, dc in next dc, in the next dc work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) [corner]; repeat from * 3 more times. Without making the last corner, join in 3rd ch of beg. ch-3.

Rnd 4: Ch 3, 2 dc in same ch; * in the next corner sp work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc; skip next 2 dc, 3 dc in next st) 3 times; repeat from * 3 more times. Without working the last 3 dc, join in the beg. ch-3.

Rnd 5: Join White yarn in ch-3 sp; ch 2, 2 hdc in same sp [corner made]; * hdc in the next 15 dc, 3 hdc in next corner ch-3 sp [corner]; repeat from * 3 more times. Without working the last 3 hdc, join with sl st to 1st hdc.

Rnd 6: Sl st into next hdc, ch 3, 2 dc in same hdc [corner made]; * dc in the next 17 hdc, 3 dc in next hdc [corner]; repeat from * 3 more times. Without working last 3 dc, join with sl st.

Rnd 7: Join Red yarn with sl st in the next dc, ch 3, 2 dc in same dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the next dc [corner]; * dc in the next 18 dc, 3 dc in the next dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next dc; repeat from * 3 more times; join to the beg ch-3 of first corner made.
End Red; weave in ends.

Rnd 8: Join Blue yarn with sc in any dc, sc in each dc around, making 3 sc in each corner space. Join to 1st sc.  
End Blue; weave in all ends.

FINISHING:
Position the red heart on the center of the blue area. Either glue it onto it or tack it on using several stitches of red yarn into the back side of the square. Weave in ends. Press with warm iron if desired.
