A Prelude

On the morning of February 8 , 1855, people in South Devonshire, western England, woke up to a heavy snowfall. And to something else : for hundreds of miles, from Topsham to Teignmouth to Dawlish, something had left a line of hoofmarks in the snow They went up walls and over roofs, and crossed a two mile river. Whatever made them had walked on two legs, with a stride of about 8 inches. There were many explanations. The tracks had been made by a kangaroo or a badger or a swan or perhaps by a toad, or hare that had kept its feet together as it had hopped across roofs and over walls. There was another explanation too, and a strange story to go with it : hunters and hounds had followed the tracks into the woods, but the hounds had turned tail, baying in terror, and the hunters followed them. The explanation- which most people found far more incredible than the kangaroos and toad explanations offered by experts - was that the hoof-prints had been made by the Devil .
