Before I go into MY info on Asteroids firstly heres some interesting info that Krystyna Zaloga emailed me:

The goverment has the technology to divert an asteroid impact now but president Clinton likes to veto projects like Clemantine 2. So if president Clinton doesnt stop vetoing these missions cause of budget cuts then he is doin a bad mistake. We have the techno stuff but we cant build it or use it without money and that is what president Clinton is doing and that is cut the budget for looking at NEOs and if telescopes cant look at them cause they dont have the money to run then that puts us at risk So it isnt the reason that we dont have the tech but its the reason that the president cuts and vetos this stuff.

Well...thats what she emailed me, now for the rest of the page (which I wrote)...

On Sunday 19th May 1996 Earth was only 280,000 miles away from total devestation!!!!

An Asteroid weighing about 150 million tons almost collided with the Earth on Sunday 19th May 1996. Only 280,000 miles of space prevented it from impact with the Earth (roughly the distance between the Earth and the Moon). The fact is that if it had impacted on the Earth then you would not be reading this now! The Asteroid was travelling at 45,000 MPH and if it had of been on course with the Earth at the moment of impact that speed would have increased to 60,000MPH because of the Earth's gravitational pull. If the Asteroid had of impacted the resulting explosive force would have been equivalent to 5 times the whole worlds nuclear hardware (i.e. EVER SINGLE nuclear weapon, bomb, reactor etc) exploding at the same time. Even if the Asteroid had of impacted in the sea the resulting shock-waves would have still delivered a fatal blow to planet Earth. More recently on the 29th of November 1996 the strangle named 'Toutatis' Asteroid came within only 3.3 million miles of the Earth which may seem like on heck of a long way away but an Asteroid flyby like that is far to close for comfort - especially when you consider that 'Toutatis' was 2.9 by 1.5 by 1.2 miles in size and an Asteroid on 0.5 miles wide hitting the Earth would release roughly 100,000 megatons of TNT - about 2000 times more energy than that of the largest most powerful hydrogen bomb ever tested by Mankind. The scary thing is that by the time Asteroids like this are detected it is far to late to be able to prevent impact. A lot of scientists believe that if such an Asteroid was detected early enough that it may be possible to destroy it or divert it away for the Earth using one or more suitable nuclear warheads. I know a lot of stupid sceptics are going on about the odds of such an Asteroid hitting the Earth are a million or so to 1 (or whatever odds they say!) - the fact of the matter is that yes the odds are extremely high but there is still that chance of an impact happening after all it wiped out the dinosaurs and if something like this did happen it would (NOT it might do - I guarantee you it WOULD) wipe out the entire Human Race. This is why in my opinion Governments (of all countries) should start construction of suitably located early detection systems - and they should start construction NOW before its to late. So seriously you just remember tonight (or tomorrow night etc) could be the last night alive for you and the rest of the Human Race (including me!) because a fairly large Asteroid could currently be on a collision course with the Earth and there is currently nothing anybody on this planet could do to prevent collision.
