Ledge Lighthouse is one of Connecticut's most famous lighthouses. It was built in 1909, and stands in the middle of Long Island Sound, where it now acts as a museum. Its full name is New London Ledge Lighthouse, but it's known informally as "Ernie's Domain" in honor of the spirit that "lives" there. His story is a simple and all too common one.
Ernie was a lightkeeper who jumped to his death from the lighthouse in 1936. His wife had run off with a ferryboat captain, and he was devastated. His ghost is said to mop the decks in the middle of the night, loosen boats from their moorings, set off the fog horn, and open the lantern room door even when it has been locked.
