Names: Frohike, Langley
and Byers Rank: civilians Background: conspiracy enthusiasts Specialty: sifting the vast amount of fringe information to find nuggets of fact |
The Lone Gunmen are the publishers of a conspiracy magazine of the same name. They have contacts and inside knowledge in a wide variety of fields, and frequently help Fox Mulder find that extra piece he needs to solve the puzzle.
Frohike is balding, short and an expert in photography, special ops and electronic surveillance; he has shown a decided interest in Agent Scully. Langley is much younger, with long blond hair. His specialty is communications. Byers is neatly dressed, has a well-trimmed beard and knows all about information systems.
There was a fourth member of the group, Kenneth Suna, aka "The Thinker." He was the hacker who accessed the Majestic-12 documents and passed them to Mulder before being murdered ("Anasazi").
The Lone Gunmen first helped Mulder confirm the transportation of an alien organism by truck in "E.B.E." They also told him about LSDM, an insecticide that acts as a natural pheromone, causing an extreme fear response in insects. This helped Mulder determine the cause, though not the causer, of the murder sprees in Franklin, Pennsylvania ("Blood"). With one glance at Scully's hospital chart, they can tell Mulder that someone has tampered with her DNA ("One Breath").
In the fourth season, Frohike becomes convinced, correctly, that the Cancer Man is out to kill him. He knows too much; in fact, he's managed to put together the entire history of the Cancer Man. But his insight is sharp enough, yet sympathetic enough, for the Cancer Man to spare Frohike's life ("Musings of a Cigarette-Smoking Man").
