Top 10 Reasons Men Won't Get Married
By Cathryn Conroy, CompuServe News Editor
It's not your imagination. Men in 2002 are taking a LOT longer to say "I do" than men did in ages past--even a generation ago. The median age for men marrying for the first time is now 27--the oldest it's ever been in U.S. history! At least, that's the word from The National Marriage Project, which is run out of Rutgers University. If the state of our marital unions is in danger, the blame may lie squarely with men and their phobia of commitment. The researchers conducted eight focus groups with 60 unmarried, heterosexual men and when all the data were crunched, the researchers came up with this (serious) list of the top 10 reasons men are so gosh darn sloooow to get married:
10. They want to enjoy single life as long as they can.
9. They want to own a house before they get a wife.
8. They are reluctant to marry a woman who already has children.
7. They face few social pressures to marry.
6. They are waiting for the perfect soul mate, and she hasn't yet appeared.
5. They fear that marriage will require too many changes and compromises.
4. They want to wait until they are older to have children.
3. They want to avoid divorce and its financial risks.
2. They can enjoy the benefits of having a wife by cohabiting rather than marrying.
And the No. 1 reason, men aren't becoming grooms:
1. They can get sex without marriage more easily than in times past.
