Janis Joplin was one of the greatest singers who ever lived. She is considered by many to be the queen of the hippies, an embodiment of the 60's. She is the most popular rock and blues female artist and probably would have been even greater had she lived longer. Janis Lyn Joplin was born in Port Arthur, Texas on January 19, 1943. Her experiences in school were nothing short of traumatic. She was hated, mocked, and humiliated because she was not like the other kids. Janis herself once said that they (the school kids and the people of Port Arthur) hated her because she didn't hate black people. She didn't have many friends, but the ones she did have kept her sane. They would take her along wherever they went because she was wild. She was used to having people stare and getting negative attention so she would readily say and do things that her friends would never dream of doing. She was known for shouting at people who made her angry, using words that no true lady would have ever said in the 50's. But her life was still full of pain and loneliness, and she took to drugs and alcohol to escape from the emptiness she felt inside her. She eventually joined the band Big Brother and the Holding Company and soon became the band's star attraction. It wasn't long before she parted with Big Brother and thereafter formed the Kozmic Blues Band and the Full Tilt Boogie Band, respectively. Janis took more and more drugs as time went on in order to escape the pain of her life, and she died of a heroin overdose on October 4, 1970. Ironically, her death pushed her final single, "Me And Bobby McGee" to #1 hit status, the first and only time one of her singles reached #1. Many people criticize her screeching singing style, but the important thing to remember is that Janis' main talent was not singing. Her biggest talent was her ability to convey emotion through her songs. That was what made Janis popular. She believed in everything she sang, forcing the audience who heard her voice to do the same. This page is dedicated to the memory of a lost little girl blue.
