After Market Fog Lights
Now whatever you do, take your time. Don't do a “hack job”. I cant even count how many times I've seen really expensive fog lights taped to the bumper with one light pointed at the sky, and one aimed sideways. This does not enhance the way your car looks at all. In fact, it makes you look like an idiot. First things first. Make yourself a nice clean area to work in. You want as much room as possible on a flat surface such as your garage. You are going to have a lot of bolts and clips on the floor, so you want to make sure you can find them later.
Now clean up the garage, sweep the floor, drive it in, pop open your hood, get your tool box, and disconnect the ground terminal from your battery . Most fog lights will come with the wire, connectors, owners manual, switch, fuses and brackets. Follow the manufacturers instructions for the wiring.
The owners manual will probably tell you this, and I am going to stress these points.
1.Use the fuses that were provided.
2. Always get power at the battery or fuse block.
3. Ground is very important. Make sure you ground to the chassis. Sand off paint if you have to.
Take your time wiring it up. It is fairly simple, but if you rush you may have to spend hours figuring out a problem due to rushing the project. Start wiring at the battery, and make way towards the switch running the wires very neatly, and looming the wire when possible. By now you should have the switch mounted, wires ran to the battery, and a set of wires waiting for the fog lights in you engine compartment.
Now it's time to remove your front bumper.
If your car has aftermarket wheels or if it's lowered, you may have to turn the steering wheel so you can get to the screws in the wheel well. There will be one short Phillips head screw holding the corners of the bumper up inside you wheel well. Remove them and place them where you won't kick them around and lose them. I usually have an empty coffee can to put all my bolts in during an installation.
There will be two 10 mm bolts under the car holding the bottom in place. Remove them. Now inside the engine compartment, there will be about 6 black snap in type clips holding the top down. Pop the inside rivets up with a panel popper or a small flathead screwdriver. After you pop them up about halfway, you should be able to pop the whole rivet off the bumper.
After you have done all this, the bumper should pretty much slide right off. If not, double check. You should not have to remove anything else! There is a metal bar that your bumper used to cover. That's what you are going to attach the fog lights to. Line up one side and mark the holes you are going to drill with a pencil. Temporarily put the bumper back on so you can check to be sure that the fog light is where you want it. Sometimes after I line the fog light up, I use double sided tape to hold it there so I can step back to make sure it's straight. This is the part that takes the most patience, but is also the most important part. Make sure it lines up!
Now you can use a measuring tape (don't just eyeball it) and match up the other side to mark the holes. To drill the holes, you will need a Teflon coated drill bit or you're going to be there forever trying to drill into that reinforced steel. After you drill the holes, you can go ahead and mount the fog lights, wire it up, then reconnect the battery.
Now making sure your car is on a flat surface, place a piece of cardboard or use a wall in front of your car and turn on the fog light switch. Using the wall or board as your guide, adjust the fog lights so that they are level, and at a useable level. Tighten the adjustment screws down and double check your alignment again. That's it! Clean up your wiring, and reattach your bumper and you are all set! That wasn't so hard now was it? Nothing like the feeling of adding your own personal touch to your car... and all by yourself!
