Air Intake Systems
ICEMAN Cold Air Intake - This is currently the most popular intake set up because of its flexibility in filter positioning. The intake is available in a "Competition" set up, which utilizes a 2 piece ABS plastic intake tract that can be configured so that the filter element is route inside the engine bay or more aggressively underneath the front headlights. The advantage of routing the air filter away from the engine bay is so the high temperatures do not affect the density of the intake charge, resulting in more power. The drawback is that the filter is more vulnerable to ingesting water, especially if the car is extremely lowered.
AEM Cold Air System - Similar to the ICEMAN set up, the AEM engineered cold air system is also designed to take advantage of the coldest air available to the engine. The TurboFlo® air filtration system fits right behind the front air dam and then an aluminum duct directs the cold fresh air to the throttle body. Unlike the ICEMAN, the AEM is a 1 piece unit that does not allow you the flexibility of mounting the filter within the engine bay. It's aluminum construction also tends to retain a lot more heat than the plastic ICEMAN unit.
HKS Super PowerFlow - This is a great performance filter which uses a wet type polyurethane filter which incorporates a special sticky fluid chemical that acts as the filtering agent. Basically, a sticky element helps filter out contaminants so that they can make the filter pores larger (freer flow). This lip shaped funnel supposedly creates a vacuum to draw more air into the green mushroom shaped filter. This is a great filter for those who are limited to space.
RS Akimoto Funnel Ram - A polished mandrel bent tube, available in a variety of colors, routes the cone style K&N filter to the front of the engine bay. Subject to engine bay temperatures. Extremely noisy!
DC Sports DAC Air System - The DAC system, like the Akimoto set up, incorporates a K&N cone style filter attached to a 3" diameter mandrel bent polished tube. The filter sits within the engine bay, which subjects it to the high temperatures: not recommended.
Greddy Airinx - A wire meshed outer shell protects the dual-density urethane filter. Comments: This is a beautiful filter. Excellent flow characteristics, one of the best I've seen. The filter itself is quite expensive and doesn't come with the metal funnel attachment that is needed to bolt it on. You'll end up paying nearly $200 because a separate mounting adapter is needed in most cases.
Tornado Air Management - . It's basically a cookie cutter shaped object that supposedly makes your air intake charge swirl and simulate a tornado. Its intent is to produce a denser and less turbulent air charge. You'll see this ad in the back of magazines claiming better fuel efficiency and power….etc.
Comments: Don't get it! Pure waste of money! Sources have dyno'ed this thing to a loss of about 5HP!!! It actually obstructed the air flow. The only good thing about it is that you can stamp out funny shaped cookie
