My main area of knowledge is in California law. Most state laws are very similar in that they pretty closely follow the Uniform Vehicle Code and pattern their own St ate codes after it. Municipalities vary considerably however and answers to any questions in that area can best be answered by making a simple phone call to your local jurisdiction.

Some scoff at my slogan to the left. Laugh if you will, but I firmly believe in it. Sure, I've written my share of tickets and THEN some. BUT, I've also given many a break to errant motorists. I couldn't care less about a monetary fine being imposed if I can just get a few scofflaws to change their driving habits. If a warning will suffice, so be it. But let's face it, some people just don't/won't learn until you hit them in the pocketbook. I can give warnings all day long, but how do I know you didn't just get one last week, yesterday or 10 minutes ago. As a rule I think I'm a pretty good judge and can easily determine when to cite or warn. I try to treat people fairly and honestly; if I'm not sure I won't write the ticket. There are enough GOOD violations without writing the "squeakers."

As to the monetary fine though, realistically we operate like any other business. We have to make money somewhere as we are not self supporting. If you don't want to financially support your public servants and contribute to the General Fund, then don't break the law.
