YF-19:

From the mind of the brain at Shinsei Ind., Yan Newman (Yang in Japanese), the experimental YF-19 was built. The YF-19 was to compete against the YF-21 to be the new AVF (Advanced Variable Fighter). These two planes, both in prototype stages at the time of their competition code named Super Nova, are state of the art, new age Valkyrie Fighters.

The YF-19 uses the same manual controls as its predecessor, the VF-11 Thunder. As the VF-11, and YF-21, this plane had three modes, Soldier, Gerwalk, and Jet fighter. With the use of advanced weaponry, and sleek, aerodynamic wing shapes, the YF-19 was an honorable adversary to the YF-21, however, because of the rep of the pilot, Lt. Isamu Dysan, the plane was the underdog during the pre-tests.

Top speeds are not know as of now (testing at New Edwards), the YF-19 is said to reach the top of the Earth's atmosphere in 19 seconds, and travels at an estimate moch 5. When in soldier mode, the head of the YF-19 contains all the surveillance devices, and sensors. These feed the pilot with vital information to a monitor set up in "navigation" section. The YF-19 has the cock pit space for a navigator, but that is optional, and varies from mission, to mission.

The Story

The YF-19 was always the lower grade AVF's because of the history of the plane itself, and the pilot. The plane went through an assortment of different repairs in result of accidents. The plane wen through about 4 different pilots, all of which were killed during pre-pre-tests.

The pilot, Isamu Dysan, a hot head flight pro, took full advantage of the YF-19, and proved that the YF-19 was the dominant of the two planes (YF-19, and YF-21), by countlessly defeating the YF-21 in tests which would exercise the abilities of the planes.

Project Super Nova was canceled after an accidental shooting while the YF-19, and YF-21 were in combat against each other. The blast left Isamu hospitalized. While recuperating, Myung left for Earth to produce a concert for Sharon Apple. After Isamu found out, he hijacked the YF-19 and folded to Earth. Being the only other plane which could possibly stop the YF-19, the YF-21 was sent after it. After a grueling battle, the YF-19, and YF-21 teamed up against the Ghost X9. Guld, the pilot of the YF-21, sacrificed himself, and plane, to stop the Ghost X9. When Isamu returned, the YF-19 was declared the winner of the Super Nova project.

X-9 Ghost:

The X-9 Ghost, at the time of the Super Nova competition, was in prototype stages. Developed by General Gomez, the Ghost X-9 fighter is un-manned, meaning that it controls itself. Using the same type of bio-neural chip as Sharon Apple, the Ghost can think to maximize strategic attacks in battle, and more importantly, learn from its mistakes, and successes.

Regardless of the size difference between the Ghost, and the traditional valkyrie fighter (the ghost being approximately half the size of the valkyrie), the Ghost can out run, and out maneuver any of the valkyrie models, thanks to its triple thermo-nuclear turbine engines, and several maneuvering verniers (this equipment allows the Ghost to out perform valkyries in atmospheric, and outer space conditions).

The Ghost's primary attack strategies are implemented as "hit and run". The Ghost is armed with 5 pulse laser cannons, and 29 micro missiles, which contain radar/sensor equipment, allowing them to be HIGHLY maneuverable. The Ghost is able to do more then adequate damage in idol time, usually, even before its target has a chance to return fire, due to its high speed, and agility. The on-board Artificial Intelligence allows the Ghost to either be remotely controlled by "cyber-pilots" at base, or it can pilot itself using the bio-neural chip.

The initial purpose for the ghost was to develop a feasible alternative to maintaining, and training pilots. The Ghost was, indeed, a life saver, as it did not require to a human to pilot. The Ghost was ideal for sending into high-risk situations, or for exploring new sectors in space.

The Story
The virtuoid idol, Sharon Apple took control of the Ghost. She used it to attack Isamu, and Guld. For strategic purposes, Isamu left to find Myung, while Guld, and his Yf-21 battled the Ghost. After failing to hit the Ghost with the YF-21's weapons due to the Ghost's agility, Guld went "kamikaze" and smashed the Ghost with the YF-21, at the cost of his plane, and life. Additional Ghost prototypes were created to again, determine its superiority over the valkyrie fighter, however, the Ghost, like Apple, developed an awareness of its existence, and occasionally dis-obeyed orders to save itself. Because of this, and the fact that the Ghost had a 55% victory status against the valkyrie, that the Ghost was scrapped, and the YF-19 was declared the next AVF to replace the VF-11.

YF-21:

The YF-21 prototype valkyrie figher was designed to compete against its "rival" YF-19 fighter. The competition, code named Super Nova was held to determine which of the two fighters would be crowned the next generation Advanced Variable Fighter. This would then render the Thunderbolt VF-11 obsolete.

Unlike the YF-19, the YF-21 was a totally new design, sporting a Zentradi battle-suit look. All of the technology which was put into the YF-21 was all in the prototype stage, giving a new feel to how the valkyrie fighters were flown. Like all standard valkyrie fighters, the YF-21 sported three modes, or variable attack positions: Fighter mode, which is when it is in the form of a jet. The soldier mode, where the YF-21 would transform into a full battloid (bearing arms, legs, and head), and the Gerwalk mode, which is a cross between fighter, and soldier mode because it is a jet, with arms and legs.

All this was irrelevant at the time when comparing the YF-21 to the YF-19 because it was standard, even for the aging Thunderbolt VF-11. The most definite edge the YF-21 has over the YF-19 is that it uses Brain Control System and Brain Direct Imaging. The BDI allows the pilot to be "fed" with all the visuals he needs via mind link. Cameras outside the jet positioned strategically would capture highly detailed, multi-views of its surroundings, and sending it to the pilots mind, resulting in superior control, and lightening fast reactions. The BCS provides the pilot with mind control, as opposed to manual control with flight sticks. All this combined provides the pilot with amazing, quick, and sufficient control over the craft.

The Story

As stated earlier, the YF-21 was competing with its rival, the YF-19 to gain supremacy, and to be used as the next main Advanced Variable Fighter. In volume one, the YF-21 was put to the test when it was ordered to out maneuver enemy missiles, and avoid damage from the missile launchers. The YF-21 was amazing, as it had out maneuvered all enemy missiles and launchers. This was a good sign for things to come, until the YF-19 finally made its debut.

Test after test, the YF-19 showed up the YF-21. Only until after the YF-19 win some respect, the two pilots, Lt. Isamu Dyasan, and Lt. Guld Bowman embarked in a brawl which left the YF-21 damaged, Lt. Bowman on the verge of court-marshall, and Lt Dyasan hospitalized.

The project known as Super Nova was canceled after a prototype unmanned fighter was given the go-ahead for mass-production on Earth. The introduction of the unmanned Ghost X-9 was to be during the UN 30th Anniversary. Isamu felt enraged with this, so he hijacked the YF-19, and folded to Earth to crash the party. Being the only other vehicle which could catch up to the YF-19, and have a chance at stopping it, the YF-21 was sent after the YF-19. At this time, the virtuoid idol Sharron Apple developed an awareness of her existence, and took Macross under "her" control. After a grueling dogfight, the YF-21 and YF-19 teamed up against Sharron Apple. Apple then took the Ghost X-9 under control to slow the two fighters down. Isamu left to fight against the Macross while the YF-21 stayed to battle the Ghost. Guld Bowman, the pilot of the YF-21, was forced to sacrifice his life, as well as the YF-21 to give Isamu a better chance with the YF-19 to defeat Apple's offsprings, and the Macross. The YF-19 was then declared the winner of the Super Nova competition.
