Over the years, the topic of turbocharging a 404 has come up a few times, sparked a lot of discussion and usually ends with that. One 404 was turbocharged, drawthru propane custom intake and exhause with extensively reworked head, reportedly produced in excess of 200hp, and had a tendency to overheat.
I decided I was going to turbo my truck. I chose a blowthru system to retain the stock carb, location, and linkage.
Next, I went to a junkyard and pulled the turbo off of a Mopar 2.2, as it is the same displacement, common as dirt, and cheap (anywhere from 50 bucks to free).
John Van Horn made me a semi-permanent loan of the head, though I think he may want it back, and I used it as the basis for my fabrication table.
I fabricated a log-style manifold out of heavy gauge plumbing fittings to get the placement of the turbo where I wanted. It's a bit leaky untill it warms up, and is probably the least efficient way of plumbing the exhaust to the turbo, but I thought I had space limitations. Turns out that may not be true, hopefully will find out soon.
Modified the carb to accept boost, mainly filled the floats and drilled out the jets, as well as making an air seal on the throttle shafts. Also milled out the pleneum divider. The vac assist on the brakes was disconnected. Replumbing it isn't too complex, but I have a habit of leaving things unfinished..
Made a boost refrenced fuel pressure regulator out of a fairly cheap Holley reg.
Modified the fuel system, actually, replaced it, and used a Holley Blue pump, run off a DC converter.
Added a oil cooler, and tapped into the lines for oil to the turbo, and tapped into the heater loop for water.
My cooling sys mod was to clear out enough room for my intake plumbing
Had to cut the dash and box in the 'tower' bonnet. I was told many times that this would avoid a lot of problems. Used radiator caps to vent excess boost pressure, paticularly when shifting.
Completely eliminated the wastegate housing, fabricated a flange and downpipe.
That's about it. Works fine by me. If I had to disconnect boost while initally installing and working thru problems, I would become depressed and got the system back on line asap.
Oh, by the way, for those who said it couldn't be done, I've got two words- wanna race?
