The biggest news in new apparatus this month comes from both Airports. O'Hare
received a 2000 Oshkosh T-3000 CFR that was assigned to 655. The old 655 equipped
with a Snozzle is now 656 and the old 656 is now in reserve status as 656R. Midway
also received a 2000 Oshkosh T-3000 but this one was equipped with a Snozzle. Midway
has also received a 2000 Ford / Wollard Stairway. It is assigned to CFR 634, replacing
the 1980 Ford / Wollard Stairway. Squad 7A, the 1994 Hummer / Fire Attacker Mini-
Pumper has been assigned to Midway from O'Hare to help protect the newly opened
parking garage & Terminal. CFR 637 was to big to fit in the garage. Bids will be going out
to replace 637 with a smaller Ford / Mini-Pumper and once delivered the Hummer will
return to O'Hare. O'Hare has two Hummer Mini-Pumpers, one is a spare. Midway is also
about to put into service EMS 886, a new Mass Casuality / Triage Unit.
The 3 new 2000 Spartan / Luverne Pumpers are at the academy and should be in service
soon. They will be assigned to E93, E116 & E117. Two of the Spartan Cabs have raised
roofs. All three pumpers were part of an emergency order.
The order for 19 new pumpers is still pending but it appears they will be built by Luverne
with Spartan cabs.
The newly purchased (emergency order) ALF/100' Tower Ladder was on display at the
FDIC Show in Indy last week. It was lettered for the wrecked TL23 but it will be assigned
to TL5 and TL5 1988 E-One 100' Tower will be going to TL23. This Tower Ladder was
built with a pump but per CFD spec's, the pump was removed and compartments were
added.
Last month Engine 96 & Truck 29 collided with each other while responding to a call.
There is no word on what the status of the repairs but T29 is a 1978 Seagrave and it is
doughtful that it will be repaired.
I have added pictures of some of the (13) 2000 Ford Explorers that the BC, EMS & OFI
are receiving. Many of the officers are not happy with the cramped space inside these
small sport utilities. It appears the next order will be Ford Expeditions.
CFD officials are still busy looking for property after the cities approval of construction of
at least 5 new Fire Stations with the possiblity of 7 total. Engine Companies that are on
the replacement list are - Engine 109, 38, 88, 18, 63, 102 & 70. Most of these Firehouses
were built back in the horse and buggy days and need to be replaced. One of the biggest
challenges for the city when they order a new piece of fire apparatus is "what station will it
fit into". The modern equipment is much larger than the older vehicles so there have been
some very tight fits. The new stations will have drive through bays and will built sidways
on the lot.
