: I just bought a VW engine that I want to overhaul. I have heard others talk about type I, type II, etc. engines. How do I figure out which one I have and if it is a 6 volt or a 12 volt system. Thanks....John

:hello john,
welcome to the world of vw's!
everyone has a opinion and i wanted to share a few things i've came across in my life with vw's.
i really hate to see someone turned off to the aftermarket vw world, granted many aftermarket parts are junk, however Technology has came a long way in the 50+ years this little engine has been around,And there are many great aftermarket date/upgrade parts out there.lets forget the buzz word"horsepower" and keep in mind that just because you improve something that makes it funtion better does not in any way cut down on it's lifespan.just the opposite is true it lasts longer.for example..vw has the "jurrasic" points in its distributor when you change to electronic you never have to clean or set the points again, also look at vw's oil filter it's a screen.lol.it does little to filter the oil that's so important to an air cooled engine the aftermarket provides us with a remote filter.these are just a couple of the many great updates out there.I have built and seen many a vw engine sometimes bigger than "stock" out last the bone stock ones. if done right a so called "high-er" performance vw engine does not inherit a short life, what causes a short life on any engine is how you take care of it how you treat it,and how it's built and the parts used.someone once said"a well built 1600 will eat-up a poorly built 1776" this is so very true, what they missed the boat on was if you build that 1776 right you have a great running long lasting engine thats got a edge on the stock dogs.the aftermarket does offer parts for those people that want to build a screamer, stroker rods / cranks, bigger cylinders, carbs , even aftermarket blocks!and yes these big old engines are too radical for street use.maybe get a magazine like "hot vw's" and see what all's to be found. i just hate for people to think the aftermarket vw world evil.
best of luck,b.lazar
