I've been in the VW scene for about 4 years now. I have to agree with the statement....depends on WHO works on them. The novice can work on them just as good as a veteran, but you have to take your time and do it right. One thing I have learned is, when you are buying a VW and they tell you it has a rebuilt motor, take this with a grain of salt. WHO rebuilt it should be the first words out of your mouth. Also using quality parts are a major factor in the quality of a VW engines life. Do regular oil changes and valve adjustmes too. Thats where a lot of problems arise. Also people tend to OVERkill the engine. You can take a 1600 DP engine and push it up and over a 2100cc. You loose a lot of life on that engine. The big thing now is to take the bigger Type III (bus) engines and convert them to a Type I (bug). I THINK the cost of the kits are around 500. If you do this, you can start off with a 1700, 1800 or even 2000cc engine. If anyone has VW stuff they dont want, please email me. Thanks
