Building a VW trike! This page will have information and lots of pictures as my project advances. As I started planning my trike I did not find much info on them on the net, so the trike I am building is entirely my creation. I wanted to share my project with all you people out there, all you people interested in trikes. But especially those who build, have build or intend to build a trike. Sometimes I ask myself why do I build? Why don't I just buy a trike? But it's not a question of money, it is the satisfaction you get building something and being proud of it. Proud when someone asks 'Where did you buy it" and you say I build it myself. And besides, someone has to build em'. So I hope the following pages will help, will be an inspiration or just be interesting.

Please be patient.. there are ten pictures each page to load, tried to keep them as small as possible with good enough resolution.

This is what we need to build our trike. Motor, transmission and part of the rear body. View from the back, I have removed the motor for easier handling.
Another view from the top. I found this puppy at a farmers yard. First cut made, I left a little more 'meat' on the tunnel. It's easier to cut than to add...
There, that's all we need from the VW. For the forks I decided to use Motocross forks they are longer and heavier than street bike forks. If you have the Bucks use Springer Forks...
'Let's just weld the motocross frame to the VW transaxle and be done with it...' I don't think it's that easy..! I cut the steering head off the motocross frame to use it on the new frame. I trashed it later because it warped from the heat of the cutting torch.
I decided the trike should be around 10-11 feet long. The rake of the steering head was determent by the length of the forks. The pipes I used are 2" seamless, wall thickness 1/4". Little more expensive but very strong.
