Why Demolition Derby?
Why not?
I remember years ago when my Dad took me to Seekonk Speedway where they had
a 100 car demolition derby. From that day I was hooked. I loved the thought
of deliberately wrecking a car. My favorite toy as a child was Clyde's Car
Crusher. It was a neat little gadjet that made cars out of tin foil and they
could wrecked and dented as if real. I begged and pleaded to attend any derby
I could and I vowed, that one day, I would be a driver rather than a watcher.
That day came when I was twenty years old and I've been doing it every year
since. Being a derbyist has forced me to learn skills that I may not have
otherwise. The old adage that what you take apart, you can put back together
holds true when building a derby car. The people that I have met through
this sport and through the I.D.D.A. have been some of the nicest folks on
earth. A good proportion of the drivers and builders generally will bend
over backwards to help a fellow driver out. Demolition Derby is truly one
of the last 'family' type sports there is today.
Speaking of Family, What Does Your Family Think About it?
When I first made it clear that I was going to build a car and smash the
hell out of it and myself, they thought it was a novel idea. I even told
my then-wife-to-be that I was going do this "Just to get it out of my system".
When I announced that I was hunting for another car to drive the following
year, they began to think that I was really starting to lose it. After that,
they knew I was insane. They're used to it now. My Dad, my brothers, and
my sister love it. In fact, I have my brother Jim driving as well. There
will be a dedication page for him here at sometime. My Mom still thinks I'm
nuts, but she still wishes me the best of luck everytime I strap my helmet
on. My wife is, and will be, the hardest to convince. She always worries
that I'm going to go out there and get my head knocked off, but the funny
thing is, she has asked me to build her a compact car to drive during the
'00 season. This is what I call progress!! Seriously folks, they support
me and help me as much as they can, and I can always count on them to come
out when I drive and be the LOUDEST , most dedicated fans I have.
