Armthorpe is a village situated on the north-eastern edge of Doncaster in the county of South Yorkshire, England. From the town centre to the village church is about three and a half miles (5km). It was a small agricultural community with a population of about 300 at the beginning of the twentieth century, but after the sinking of the Markham Main Colliery in 1920 the village vastly increased in size. Mr Wilson's business was closely associated with the coal industry - he provided transport to and from work for miners and a bus service to and from Doncaster for the new population of Armthorpe. He also operated services to other collieries in the area.
The route shown on the map is as it was in 1979. When Mr Wilson's bus undertaking began, part of the road between Doncaster and Armthorpe was little more than a cart track, so services operated at first via Hatfield Lane, the road leading northwards out of the village, and then on Thorne Road, the A18. The M18 and A630 shown on this map were built in the 1960's.
