Penske Racing and American Motors
1971 - Penske Racing won the Sports Car Club of America Trans-Am Championship Series for American Motors with a Javelin driven by Mark Donohue.
1973 - "Winston Western 500" at Riverside, California, Mark Donohue, driving the Red-White-Blue #16 AMC Matador, won Penske Racing's first NASCAR race.
1975 - Penske Team suffers the tragic loss of Mark Donohue during Formula One practice for the Austrian Grand Prix. In NASCAR, Bobby Allison wins both Darlington events in the Penske Racing #16 AMC Matador.
2002
Dave Marcis Retires
Dave Marcis, age 60 competing in his final Daytona 500 was sidelined early due to cooling problems.
Dave drove AMC Matadors in the early 1970's on the NASCAR circut.
American Motors at Indianapolis
1979:
Jerry Sneva qualified the #73 National Engineering/Spirit AMC Indy Car 21st at 184.370 MPH, and went out on lap 16 due to a piston, finishing in 31st position. He led no laps and was awarded $18,357.
1978:
Roger McCluskey qualifies at 192.250 MPH and starts in the 11th position in the #11th National Engineering/ HodgdonEagle/AMC. Roger completed 82 laps, when clutch problems sidelined the effort, and he finished 25th for an $18,707 payday.
1977:
Jim McElreath qualified the Carrillo Rods/Fred CarrilloEagle/AMC at 187.710 MPH which is good for a 20th starting position. The #73 machine ran 71 laps before going out with turbocharger problems. He led no laps, and was awarded $22,434.
1976:
Jerry Grant was flagged after completing 91 laps, and finished 27th in the #73 California-Oklahoma/CarrilloEagle/AMC He had qualified the aluminum AMC stock-block at 183.610 MPH, good for a 20th starting position. He led no laps, and was awarded $15,594.
Hudson at Indianapolis
1934
Gene Haustein qualified the #29 Lawrence Martz Hudson/Hudson at 109.420 MPH. A crash on lap 13 led to finishing in 31st place. He led no laps, and was awarded $479.
1933
Gene Haustein finished 15th, after starting 28th on a qualifying speed of 107.600 MPH. He was flagged on lap 197 to end his day, led no laps and was awarded $380.
Al Miller, drove the #19 R.G. 'Buddy Marr' Hudson to a qualifying speed of 109.000 MPH, and starting from the 24th position, ran 161 laps without leading a single one, and was eventually knocked out by an engine rod failure. He was awarded $295 for his efforts.
Chet Miller qualified the #28 R.G. 'Buddy' Marr' Hudson at 112.000 MPH, good for 32nd on the starting grid, and completed 163 laps before an engine rod failure ended his day. Chet finished 39th and led no laps. He was awarded $305.
Ray Campbell rounded out the impressive showing of Hudson at the brickyard in 1933 by qualifying the #59 in the 37th position with a speed of 108.650 MPH. The G&D/Tulio Gulotta Hudson finished 39th due to an oil leak on lap 24. He was awarded $204.
1932
Al Miller, a rookie qualified the #29 R.G.'Buddy' Marr Hudson in the number 18 position with a speed of 110.000 MPH. Miller was retired on lap 66 due to an engine failure, and finished 27th. He led no laps, and was awarded $565.
Chet Miller, retired on lap 125 due to engine failure, finished 21st. The #9 R.G. 'Buddy' Marr Hudson qualified 29th at 111.000 MPH. Miller led no laps and was awarded $590.
1931
Chet Miller, qualified the #27 R.G. 'Buddy' Marr Hudson in 15th position with a speed of 106.000 MPH. Miller and his Hudson completed all 200 laps, finishing 10th, while leading none, and was awarded $1,400.
1919
Ira Vail (rookie) finished 8th in the #27 Hudson Motor Car Hudson. He started from the 10th position with a 94.100 MPH qualifying speed. Running all 200 laps and leading none, Ira was awarded $1,600.
W.W. Brown (rookie) finished 32nd from the 17th starting position in the #5 C.L. Richards Brown Hudson-Brett qualifying at 99.800 MPH. Retired on lap 14 due to a rod failure. Brown led no laps, and received no award.
Ora Haibe completed all 200 laps while going from 26th to 14th in the #17 Hudson Motor Car Hudson. Haibe had qualified the Hudson at 92.800 MPH. Interestingly, he did not receive an award! He led no laps.
Dennis Hickey (rookie) completed all 200 laps in the #21 A.C. Stickle Hoskins Hudson. Dennis qualified 27th for the race at 92.500 MPH. He led no laps, and finished 9th. Hickey was awarded $1,500.
