"HOW DO I CHANGE MY NICK?"
Easy just type: /nick fishpuke and your nick will change to "fishpuke"...cool nick, huh? :)
"HOW DO I PING SOMEBODY?"
Just type: /ctcp nick ping and look at reply in status window (like, /ctcp fishee ping)
"WHAT ARE OPS?"
Ops (channel operators) are the rulers
of a channel. They are usually easily spotted because they
have a "@" next to their nick, like: @fishee.
An op can kick you out of a channel and even ban you
and your entire domain and country from
coming back into that channel. Needless to say that you
should always be nice to ops because they
can kick and ban you for ANY reason they want. And
remember, just because a person isn't
wearing his/her op sign doesn't mean they cannot kick
you...so be nice to everybody :)
"GIMME OPS!!!!"
Well, becoming an op is pretty tough. First
you must kiss the toes of all other channel ops. Then
there is the 1200-dollar registration
fee, payable to each channel op. Then there is the sacrifice and
the goat's blood ritual, assuming we can
find a virgin. When all is done and you are finally an op, all
you get to do is kick/ban lame people
with lame requests like "GIMME OPS!!" and well...it just ain't
worth it :P
"NO REALLY...HOW DO I BECOME AN OP?"
That's better :) Now to become an op you
can start your own channel or you can become a trusted
regular in an exisiting channel that you
enjoy. Get to know the ops (we won't bite) and earn their
trust and respect. Then tell them you'd
like to be an op on that channel...if they like you, you're in!
"I'VE BEEN BANNED FROM A CHANNEL!!! HOW DO I GET BACK IN?"
You must private chat (dcc or /msg) an
op in that channel and beg. If you were banned from say,
#irchelp you would type: /msg fishee I
am sorry, I promise to behave, please unban me! ...
remember, ops do not HAVE to unban you.
"BUT I WAS NEVER IN THAT CHANNEL, HOW DID I GET BANNED??"
There are different types of bans. A ban
may be imposed on a single user/nick, or on your entire
internet service provider (ISP) or even
on your entire country. The ban may not mean that you
personally did something wrong, but you
are a victim of the ban. Kinda like group punishment.
"HOW DO I FIND A PARTICULAR SUBJECT/TOPIC CHANNEL??"
Use the channel bots...if you are searching
for music type: /msg x,w search music (or any topic).
You may have to be more specific for the
search, or you can also try: /list music (or any topic)
"HOW TO COPY/PASTE IN MIRC??"
Hold leftmouse button down and drag across
the text you want to copy. Release the mousebutton,
the hilite will disappear. To paste, simply
press "ctrl" button and letter "V" at the same time.
"HOW CAN I BE INVISIBLE?"
If your nick is "fishee" you'd type (in
channel or status window): /mode fishee +i and this will make
you invisible to a channel /names or general
/who search, but NOT to a whois, nor to people in same
channel as you, nor to yourself. Let's
face it...if you were invisible to yourself how would you know
if your socks matched? :)
"HOW COME I GET DISCONNECTED WHEN LISTING CHANNELS?"
Simply put, there are too many channels
(currently over 10,000 on Undernet alone!). When you
request a channels list what you are really
doing is requesting a packet of information from the
server. The server, after a while, detects
that no person in their right mind would want a packet that
size, so they disconnect you. I know thats
not a real technical explanation, but its the easiest to
understand.
"O.K. SO HOW DO I LIST CHANNELS THEN??"
You have a few options. First you can list
by the number of people in a channel. Let's say you only
wanted to list channels that had more
than 3 people, but less than 10. You could do: /raw list ? <10
or you could list by a keyword, like /list
baseball. You can also use X and W bots to search channels
for you, like: /msg X,W search fish
"WHAT IS 'LOL'?"
LOL means "Laughing Out Loud". Some other
irc abbreviations are: brb=be right back, rofl=rolling
on floor laughing, roflmao=rolling on
floor laughing my a*s off, bbl=be back later, bbiab=be back in a
bit, afk=away from keyboard, gmta=great
minds think alike.
"HOW DO I REGISTER MY NICK?"
There is no nick registration on the Undernet.
Which also means that if you are not online and using
your nick, someone else can steal it.
Try to pick an original nick to avoid conflicts
"WHY DOES PING?PONG! KEEP SHOWING IN MY STATUS WINDOW?"
PING? is your server making sure you are
still connected, probably because you haven't typed
anything for awhile. PONG! is your mIRC
(client) telling the server "yeah, I'm here". It is automatic.
"HOW DO I FIND WHERE A FILE SOMEONE SENT ME WENT?"
in channel window type: //say $getdir and it shows you the directory your filegets are in
"HOW DO I START MY OWN CHANNEL?"
Easy, just type: /join #mychannelname and
*POOF* there it is. If your channel is interesting enough
it will attract people. When you have
enough people that visit frequently you may apply to have the
channel registered. This will help protect
against channel takeovers from other people. There is no
cost to register your channel and either
X or W bot will be supplied.
"WHATS A BOT?"
A "BOT" is short fo roBOT...not a real
person, but a programmed designed to simulate one. Some
bots are good and perform duties like
file transfers and help, some bots are bad and flood people off
(disconnect them) from IRC. X and W are
channel service bots (good bots) and are found on all
registered undernet channels
"WHOIS X AND W? WHY ARE THEY ON SO MANY CHANNELS?"
X and W are channel service bots...when
you register a channel one of them is assigned to you and
helps protect your channel. X is a female
(bottess) and W is a male :)
"MY DCC WON'T SEND!!"
There could be a few reasons for this.
First, once you are connected to a server the server requires
a proper "IP address". This is in your
setup folder, under the heading "local info". In the status
window type: /dns andyournick and look
at the "resolved IP address". This number MUST match
the IP number in your setup folder. If
it does not, change the info in setup folder to match the one in
the status window. This is usually caused
by not having done a proper setup...in setup folder make
sure that the "on Connect always get"
buttons are both clicked ON when you first connect to a
server.
IT SAID "UNABLE TO RESOLVE" MY /DNS!!!!
First, in setup folder make sure "identd"
is enabled, disconnect from the server and try reconnecting.
If this does not solve the "Unable to
Resolve" problem when you /dns yourself then disconnect from
your ISP (Internet service provider) and
reconnect. Try mIRC again, it should work fine now.
BUT I DID ALL THAT AND I STILL CAN'T DCC SEND!!!!!
Then you may be behind what is called a
"firewall"...many universities and business use a firewall as
a security measure. Contact your internet
service provider or your system administrator and discuss
it with them.
"WHATS AN IRC COP?"
An ircop is an IRC operator (IRCop) is
someone who maintains a server or part of the IRC
network.Some users confuse ircop with
irc-cop...there is no such thing as an irc cop. IRCops will
not fix channel problems. They will not
kick someone out of a channel for you. They also will not
/kill (disconnect a user from their IRC
server temporarily) someone just because you gave the
offender channel operator privileges and
said offender kicked *you* off. IRCops have better things
todo than interfere in channel affairs.
"WHAT IS LAG? wHAT IS A NETSPLIT?"
IRC is much like any other "internet" file
transfer...each server can only handle a certain amount of
information. As the load (transfer of
information) becomes heavier, the time it takes to transfer the
information slows down. This is known
to IRC users as LAG. Eventually the load may become too
great, and the server connection is broken
(temporarily). This is called a NETSPLIT.
"WHAT IS PING?"
A PING is a way of measuring the time it
takes for information to go from your computer to the
person that you pinged and then back to
you. This is shown as a Ping Reply. Pings are used to
check LAG.
"HOW TO REGISTER A CHANNEL?"
To register a channel you will need 10
supporters (nicks and email addresses required) and fill in the
registration form located at http://cservice.undernet.org/regist/
(takes aprox. 10 days and there is no
cost)
"WHAT DOES THE +t OR +tn MEAN NEXT TO THE CHANNEL NAME?"
These are the "CHANNEL MODES":(t)=topic-set-by-ops,
(p)=private (only users presently in
channel no joins)(wont show /names #)
(s)=secret (wont show in channel list)(wont show /names #)
(n)=no outside messages to #channel, (k)=key
(password), (i)=invite (invited user only will be able to
join) (l)=limits number of people in channel,
(m)=moderated-ops-only-speak, (+v)=lets non-ops speak
in +m (moderated channel).
"I TRIED CONNECTING TO MY SERVER AND
IT SAID I WAS K-LINED...WHATS
THAT?"
a K-LINE is a ban against your domain/isp.
Some servers restrict access to local users and might
therefore close or not even accept a connection
from you. Bad behavior by you or your friends,
customers from your provider or an entire
country may also be restrcited from using certain servers.
To get unbanned from a channel: Type /names
#channelname and look for an op (nick's with an @
sign other than X or W). Then /Msg an
op and ask to be unbanned. It could mean an isp ban and not
you personally. Remember they don't HAVE
to unban you.
