Jesse L. Martin
Jesse L. Martin has appeared on
Broadway
in Timon of Athens and The Government Inspector.
Off-Broadway, he has performed in Rent, The Arabian Nights and
Ring of Men. Regional creadits include I Ain't Yo Uncle,
Shakespeare's Rock-n-Roles, The Butcher's Daughter, Two
Gentlemen of Verona and Romeo and Juliet. He has appeared
on television in New York Undercover, One Life to Live, and
Guiding Light. Martin is currently preparing two one-man shows,
Fiend and an untitled piece based on the life of Marvin Gaye.
Jesse L. Martin: Everyone in RENT is sort of raw. We don't have that shiny, happy mentality that is typical of the music-theatre crowd. There's a lot of me in Tom Collins. I remember Jonathan had this specific idea that Collins reminded him of Tom Waits -- a grizzled character, just a big mess with a heart of gold.
