Gilles
Chiasson:
I'm one of the few members of the cast that
loves musical theatre. But musicals suck most of the time, especially
when viewed through a contemporary lens. A musical carries a funny
burden, because it is an emotionally-driven medium. The thing that
drives a musical is not necessarily plot, and certainly not its intelluctual
content; it's really an emotional ride. RENT has a point of view that
takes the risk of stating what it believes. It risks failure in many
ways, which is one of the things that makes it exciting.
