When RENT first began to emerge, most were interested in it because it went so blatantly against the mainstream of theatrical tradition... I mean where else would you find heroines that were crack-head nymphomaniac prostitutes? (Well, technically not prostitutes, but errotic dancers) It was such a shock to the system, most people were either repulsed or drawn in with no hope for survival... But after a while, once time had worn away the initial jolt of the super-realism, we began to see the true emotions and humanity each of the characters represented... Yes, even the hated Benny... The poetic genius of Jonathan Larson was finally getting its just reward... Unfortunately, it was a bit late for Jonathan, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his work. Since then, the phenomenon has not decreased, and hundreds and hundreds of us so-called RENT Junkies have gone repeatedly to see it, or immerse ourselves in the beauty of the work in any way possible. If you have not seen or heard RENT, I (along with hundreds of others, I'm sure) STRONGLY encourage you to give it a try. RENT is pure poetry, and the best representation that exists of the beginning of a life made of endings...
