Editorial
In this issue you will find an article written by Maurice Batchelor about telescopes. Maurice has written this with beginners firmly in mind. I offer an apology to Chris Campbell – after pestering her for a poem, she wrote one about the barbecue. It should have been in the previous Aries but I managed to misplace it. Oops! Thankfully, I have located it and so the poem appears here, albeit a tad late. Sorry Chris. Also in this issue, I have written an article about the planet Mercury. I have learnt a lot from the research needed for this task and can fully recommend it as a way of learning about a topic. I have never really been interested in Mercury but I have discovered that it is a fascinating planet. The reason I wrote it was that I promised Richard Smith some material for the DDAS website ages ago but never delivered. I had a look at the site (really smart new look – Richard has put a lot of work into it) and noticed that there was nothing about the planets there. So, logically, I thought ‘do him an article’, start nearest the Sun and work outwards. More will follow in due course.
It is my intention to try to produce a newsletter for each meeting unless there is an Aries to be distributed. Any ideas and contributions for these short newsletters will be welcomed, particularly ideas for Society surveys or discussion topics.
