Big Moon Risin' ...
Many of you will have noticed the 'Moon illusion', you know, where the moon seems really large when it is rising. There have been loads of ideas as to why this should be. One idea is that when you se the moon high in the sky there are no familiar landmarks to compare it to and so it looks smaller. Another favourite is that the atmosphere acts as a lens, magnifying the moon. Apparently it is because your brain interprets the sky above your head as being closer than the sky on the horizon and adjusts the size of the image accordingly.
