Several blocks away Backe's first encounter with Earth includes a bank robbery.  His mental powers nearly stop the robbery until a black limousine pulls up in front of the bank. Backe seals himself inside the armored car and refuses the car driver's invitation to leave.  Stepping out of the limousine, Iron Cross tears the doors off the armored vehicle. Backe leaves and Earthguard(r) is called to investigate.

Phase, Star-Scanner and Forge go to talk with Janet Pim.  She is telling how some people had captured her and the Vision and were somehow changing the Vision. An explosion inside the room stops the conversation and almost kills Janet. The technician responsible is caught and he gives only small bits of information. One of those bits is O'Neil's bar.

Backe recalls that Mr. Stark was the driver of the Black Limousine at the Bank Robbery.
Kyoto and Aji go to O'Neil's to see what information they can gather while everyone else goes to the East German Embassy to look for the Vision.  At O'Neil's, A-Team is caught in the trap as Aji and Kyoto are attacked by the Assassin Squad.  Arsenic and Garrote are knocked out and Kyoto cuts off Stiletto's arm when Earthguard(r), Crimson Fury, Dark Vision and Iron Cross make their appearance.  When the dust settles Phase is the only one left standing, all the villains escape and Kyoto is pronounced brain dead.

A thoroughly botched attempt at intimidation leads to nothing except alerting the bank clerk he is being watched.  The clerk is followed and he leads Earthguard(r) to a distant London suburb.  The trip back to London goes past a curiously closed and empty Stonehenge for this time of year.  The date is December 21, 1985, winter solstice.
Darkwar returns to Earthguard(r) headquarters after taking some time to clear his head after the Red Guardians fiasco.  He is informed by Marvel the rest of the team is in England.  She also tells him he is wanted by SHIELD.  SHIELD is telling people to treat Darkwar as an extremely dangerous felon (issue #116).  Marvel lets him go but silently vows the next time they meet she will take him into custody.
Arriving back at Captain Britain's Estate, Corona says he has been reading about how the Druids are using Stonehenge for human sacrifices.  "It says so right here in the London Star, right next to the nude girl on page three."  Despite everyone's disbelief as to the accuracy of the story, a trip to Stonehenge is arranged and as expected there are no Druids practicing human sacrifice. Instead, there is Blackstone and company:  Wartiger, who is under Blackstone's influence fights against Earthguard(r); Blackhole who delivered Wartiger to Blackstone (and the Coven); and the Terror; waiting for the arrival of the heroes. As the battle progresses every stray shot raises a stone in the Stonehenge circle and after several minutes of fighting the entire monument is standing as it was when it was new.  At the moment the monument is standing erect, Phase defeats/kills the Terror, the Terror's evil spirit traps Phase and both bodies are reduced to ash by the released energy.  Blackstone is last seen being carried into space by Darkwar, Wartiger regains his memory and Blackhole escapes.

Corona tries to reach the Earthguard(r) satellite and reason with Sunturian.  This time Sunturian is so overwhelmed with power he cannot be reasoned with and his bolts of solar power quickly defeat Corona.
Megan breaks into Earthguard(r) to steal a medical file from Mr. Hammond.  She is discovered but "disappears" and avoids capture.
Robert Hammond calls for a new leader election after the death of Phase.  Against his first instincts Superboy, decides to ask for core membership.  Before the vote,  Darkwar arrives and he and Marvel get into a fight as Marvel attempts to arrest him (see last issue). The fight is interrupted when Superboy tries to intervene and is accidentally hit. Darkwar is allowed to leave when he gives his word to abide by the ruling of the court as to his guilt or innocence.  Rann Thurstar is also obliged to pledge his property as bail.
Cyclotron and Corona reveal their plans on retiring from Earthguard(r) but not until after they have cast their vote for leader.  By a wide majority Superboy is elected as the fifth leader of Earthguard.  Captain Britain and Soulforce are given reserve status.

title:  Double Jeopardy
Earthguard:  Superboy, Wartiger, Speedster, Marvel, Soulforce, Gadget, Cyclotron
opponents:  "Marvel", Nuke-man, Asunder, Blastar
Others:
Action:  Gadget is puzzled by something Marvel mentioned about the vote. She said that there are five votes counted but six votes cast (Corona, Cyclotron, Marvel, Speedster, Superboy, Wartiger).  Gadget discovers it was Marvel's vote that was not recorded  and upon further investigation he doubts that this is the real Marvel. A number of checks are made, one of which was consulting Magneto, and Superboy and Gadget decide the only way to confirm or deny their suspicion is to run a full physical on Marvel.
"Marvel" has other ideas. She slips Superboy a message saying a surprise for Earthguard(r) is resting in F-Deck just before she gives everyone the slip. Eventually Earthguard(r) gets into F-Deck's lowest level to look around.
Meanwhile, the real Marvel has been working on her own escape during the last several months.  She breaks into the cell of Asunder and although they don't care for one another they agree to help each other escape.  That is when Superboy and Cyclotron accidentally release Blastar.  Blastar is eventually defeated.
There were only two recorded escapes:  Asunder and Nuke-man, Asunder's partner.  No mention of Marvel's incarceration is recorded.

Marvel has ideas of her own.  Still angry about how promptly her "friends" were about rescuing her, she tells Superboy that she is going to find her captors even if it means being suspended from the team. Superboy allows her to do research on her captors while he tests the powers of the new recruits.  He also warns Marvel that she must keep the team informed of her plans if she wants their cooperation.
It doesn't take long for Marvel to determine her impersonator was Chrissy since she and the Force of July both work for the CIA.  She takes Wartiger and Captain Midnight to CIA headquarters in New York.   They stay long enough to transfer several computer files into DAD before they are asked to leave.

Earthguard:  Superboy, Marvel, Speedster, Gadget, Soulforce
Heroes:  Black Shadow, Captain Britain
opponents:  Mandarin, Ultimo, Vertigo
others:  Wartiger, Robert Hammond, U N Chinese Ambassador
Action:  After gaining some background information on the Mandarin from the Chinese Ambassador, Earthguard(r) sets off to get the Mandarin's rings.  (The U.S. Government, pressured by the Chinese to help them dispose of the Mandarin, asked Robert Hammond and Earthguard(r) to do their dirty-work. Hammond agreed but only if he was promised the Mandarin's teleportation ring otherwise they would have to get the Red Guardians.  The Chinese agree as they do not want the Red Guardians to enter China. To convince Superboy into taking the team to China they do not mention the deal only that the Mandarin is an international felon.)  Earthguard(r) manages to bypass the large Mandarin army and after defeating Ultimo, a huge guard robot, Earthguard(r) sets off to the castle and the Mandarin.
A pitched battle ensues but the outcome is really never in doubt as the Mandarin proceeds to wade through the ranks of Earthguard(r).  The battle turns when Vertigo is  released from the Mandarin's influence and Marvel, Gadget and Captain Midnight are almost killed.  Superboy refuses to retreat and as the combat is about to be lost, the Mandarin sets off an atomic blast.  Earthguard(r) escapes by using Vertigo as a portal to his inner "dimension".

Action:  As the blast soars skyward, Superboy grabs Mandarin and races into space.  Superboy can not completely outrace the blast and is knocked unconscious.  Superboy awakes in deep space.  The Mandarin is nowhere in sight.  Using his supervisions, Superboy locates four of the Mandarin's rings but instead of taking them to Earthguard(r) headquarters he sends them into different orbits around the earth.
Back at Earthguard(r), Superboy fills Wartiger in on the details.  Wartiger has access to Vertigo's subspace and casts a spell that retrieves the stranded Earthguardians. Superboy is chided by Hammond for leaving the rings within easy grasp of anyone who can find them, specifically the Mandarin.  "The safest place for the rings is where you know they are.  Anyone who can use them can find them and that is why I think they should be brought down to Earthguard(r) headquarters."
The meeting is called early as Corona is noticed flying off with Megan (he first quits Earthguard(r) and destroyed their primary satellite dish).  At the meeting Gadget is dropped from all Earthguard(r) affiliation as Superboy feels it is too dangerous for him to participate in any more combat missions.   Captain Midnight and Black Shadow are given temporary status to see how they work with the team.  The membership votes to retrieve the Mandarin's rings.  Speedster never shows up for the meeting.
