Speedster

Rick Smith was a patriotic American boy who lied about his age so he could fight in Vietnam. After two years, he attained a position in the Green Berets, but by this time, Rick has begun to doubt his government's policies in the war. When he heard about a special project bac in the States, he volunteered. The project involved the creation of a "super scout" by implanting a device in the brain stem that would increase an individual's reflexes. Rick was unaware that the project also involved the injection of radioactive isotopes and being forced to swim through chemically-treated waters. By chance, he discovered the files concerning himself and how he was being mutated. Using his new powers, he escaped.

Because of his betrayal and mutations, Rick felt he could not trust anyone except his old friends in the Green Berets. Rick could not tell them the truth so he was forced to keep on the move to avoid being captured by the U.S. Army and the Soviets, who had found out about the experiments.

For years Rick tried not to use his powers until he met other mutant superheroes. They helped him reconsider and, calling himself Speedster, he made himself known to other superheroes.

Most of Speedster's powers derive from the implant and treatmetns he received. The implant increases an individual's reflexes by ten time. He can now run in excess of 150 miles per hour and can run so fast he can climb buildings and walls as long as he keeps moving. Speedster uses two items to protect himself, a suit of body armor and a pair of polarized goggles that allow him to see at night.
