Apricot Easter Squares

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg, well beaten
1/2 tsp lemon juice
1 1/2 cup flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 pn cloves
2 Tbsp milk
3/4 cup apricot preserves

1. Cream shortening.
2. Add sugar, cream until fluffy.
3. Add egg and lemon juice.
4. Blend well.
5. Sift together dry ingredients, adding alternately with milk.
6. Spread half the batter into greased 9 x 9 inch pan.
7. Cover with apricot preserves.
8. Top with remaining half of the batter.
9. Bake at 400 degrees F for 25 minutes or until golden brown and batter test is done.
10.Cool and cut into squares.
