Kulich (Russian Easter Bread)

4 cups flour
1 tablespoon yeast
1 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar
3 large eggs
1 stick butter
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup dried fruit
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground saffron
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Icing and glace cherries

1.   Warm the milk to lukewarm.
2.   Sprinkle on the yeast and 1 tsp. of the sugar.
3.   Add half of the flour.
4.   Mix well and allow to go frothy.
5.   Cream the butter and sugar.
6.   Beat in the eggs one at a time.
7.   Add the yeast mixture and all the other ingredients.
8.   Knead well.
9.   Cover and let rise until doubled.
10.Bake at 375 for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.
11.Cool and then decorate with icing and glace cherries.
Note: Traditionally this bread is baked in tall cans, you can use well greased old soup bean  or coffee cans, or mold the dough to form the letters of the word PAX meaning peace.
