2 teaspoons yeast
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon mixed spice
1 cup currants or raisins
1 tablespoon candied
peel -- chopped
1 tablespoon melted butter
3 cups flour
Almond Paste
1/3 cup almonds -- ground
1/3 cup sugar
1 large egg yolk
1 teaspoon lemon juice

Warm the milk to lukewarm.

Add the yeast and sugar.

Mix the flour and spice into a bowl.

Add the yeast mixture.

Mix together to form a dough.

Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.

Gradually work in the fruit and the melted butter.

Knead.

Roll out to an oblong 10 x 5.

Mix the almond paste ingredients to form a firm paste.
11.Roll
this into a long sausage shape.
12.Place
on the rolled out dough.
13.Roll
the dough around the almond paste forming the join at the bottom.
14.Glaze
with milk.
15.Put
on a greased baking sheet.
16.Allow
to rise till double.
17.Bake
400 for 10 minutes.
18.Decrease
heat to 325 bake 45 minutes more or until evenly golden brown.
19.Allow
to cool.
20.Serve
sliced with plenty of butter.
