This web site has many facets. The links on the main page give descriptions of the different mechanisms of energy production. These are given here for students to explore if interested. When they do the lessons, they will want to find information to back up their work, and the links provided will give them access to the information on the web. The Internet searching has been started for them, but they may want to try more on their own. We have provided enough links to finish any of the lessons. The miscellaneous section has extra links to more energy sites to complement the links given initially. There is also a link to an energy exercise to give students an idea of how many work hours are needed to run different things around the home. The lessons plans are designed to get students interested in the issue of energy production and give them an idea of the amount of debate in this area. The lessons also get students to evaluate the material they are presented with and begin to teach them to read critically.
Lesson 0 is a fun word search game with words found when discussing energy choices.
Lesson 1 is an article that has been marked up with comments pointing out areas that a good reader would have made note of.
Lesson 2 continues this idea but with no extra comments, the students would have to write up their own suggestions on where the article may be misleading.
Lesson 3 allows the student to link to a web page and they are required to find three or more things that are weak or questionable about the page.
Lesson 4 develops a scenario where some of students are a committee that must make the decision on what energy sources to fund. The rest of the class presents their cases for different energy industries.
Lesson 5 gets the students involved in their own local area. They are to obtain brochures from each of the local energy producers and rewrite them (removing bias) creating their professional looking documents.
Lesson 6 gives the students the opportunity to write their own persuasive (biased if wanted) essays to convince people to conserve energy. This lesson also gives students practice with web page production and the chance to have their opinions heard by the population at large.
