In my opinion Asuka is one of the most important characters in the series. Most of the time, she acts as the comic relief in the series.. with an ego to feed. Towards the end of the series, her darker past is revealed, which tears her apart.. until the movie.

Asuka is born of Japanese and German blood and was raised in the United States as a U.S. citizen. Later she was brought to Tokyo-3 as the official pilot of Eva Unit-02 to help defend against the threat known as the "Angels."
