First, A Word About The Mouse
We didn't like The Mouse when he scurried through the kitchen and hid under the stove. Or when the cat left him as a present on our front porch. So why should we tolerate him now? Thankfully, we don't have to be held hostage by the little bugger for everything we do.Shortcuts are perfect alternatives when working in Microsoft's Word 97. It saves that back and forth action of reaching for the mouse and re-aligning our fingertips back on the keyboard. One of the best things we can do for ourselves is to learn and use a few shortcuts at a time. Listed below are a few fundamental 'shorts worth knowing.
Note: Many shortcuts are made up of two keys. To use this type of combination, hold down the first key and tap the second. Afterwards, release the first key. It is not necessary or expected that you punch two keys at the same time.
Keyboard Shortcuts Command Keystroke Comment Save Ctrl-S saves a document for the first time, or saves the most recent changes Save As F12 use this command to save the current revised file under another name and keep the original. Copy Ctrl-C copies the selected text to the clipboard Cut Crtl-X moves the selected text to the clipboard Paste Crtl-V inserts text from the clipboard Format Font Ctrl-D accesses the font dialog box Increase Font Ctrl-] increases the font size by one point on selected text Decrease Font Ctrl-[ decreases the font size by one point on selected text You may have already noticed some of these 'shorts and others listed in the Menu Bar. If you're really serious about learning shortcuts, Do this:
- Click Tools:Customize
- Click on the Options Tab
- Click to place a checkmark next to "Show shortcut keys in ScreenTips"
- Click the Close button
You're all set! Try it out. Point at shortcut buttons on any of the toolbars. Don't forget to wait for the screen tip to pop up. It's here that you'll see an alternative keyboard shortcut for many of the button commands.
