Tips for Downloads
First off, If you are using AOL, and are tired of their timers, Get another ISP! I used AOL when I first joined the web, but I got tried of their timer kicking me off-line in the middle of a demo download. I now use AT&T World net and don't have to worry about any timers at all. I have downloaded game demoes that were 110 Megs big on a 56K modem, took about 7 hours but I was not booted from the net. And I did not have to baby sit the computer until the download was done, I just turned the monitor off and wait for the wav. sound file to play to let me know it is done downloading.
You should also have an antivirus program running when you are on the net.
There are two programs that I use to help with downloading using a 56k modem;
1. PPP Boost, This has raised my speed by about 2.3k a second, was about 5K now up to 7.3K.
2. Download Accelerator Plus, This connects to 4 different sites to give you a fast download. When the site it's using
slows down, it will switch over to one of the other 4 site for max. speed in the download. For the people that have the new Netscape 6.01, they should try
version 4.3 of this program to work with Netscape 6.01. There is an updated one that now works with 6.01.
Before you start to download, you might want to do this first.
1. Create a folder called, New Downloads and then create one called, Saved Downloads. If you can, put New
Downloads on C drive and put Saved Downloads on another hard drive. That is if you have more than one hard
drive. This way if you get a virus, you will have all of your downloads saved on D drive. Where they are safe and
not affected by the virus on C drive.
