The History of Misdirection & Understatement
The Art of Understatement...
The withholding of coffee by Donna. Okay, she doesn't exactly withhold the coffee- she just refuses to bring Josh any. Except when he's in danger of being fired for going on TV and making sense...or, he's attended a bachelor party, with strippers- abused his delicate system, and the coffee's a day old and real cold. This is not typical boss/assistant behavior.
The Art and Artistry of Alpine Skiing. Okay, who among us hasn't wondered what Josh wrote in that book he gave her for Christmas, that brought tears to her eyes. This was the gift he got her instead of the skis she said she wanted (let's not mention the ski boots, ski poles, ski jacket, etc..there was a list, folks. Who gives their boss a list like that?) I bet if he had given her skis, he wouldn't have got a reaction like that hug.
Josh's level of interest in "the local gomers". Deny it , though he may, Josh's level of interest would appear to be pretty high. When he makes the assertion that Donna has no future with a guy-because he "said so" that would seem to be a pretty strong indicator. Combine this with the fact that, though he assures Sam he's not jealous, he does not like her dating, and does "everything within his considerable capabilities to discourage" her dates. Nope, no interest there...
The view from Josh's office: Now in my book, it's a pretty big indicator when you stand /sit in your bosses office so that you can watch for (anticipate) his return.
The Shooting & "The Rules" The look of total devastation on Donna's face when she found out he'd been shot, and the absolute authority with which she enforced the "rules" pertaining to his recovery.
Noel perceptions Of all the people who work around and are close to Josh, who was the one person to realize he was emotionally on the edge...Donna.
Donna on a stamp Okay- let's totally ignore the fact that you have to have to be dead to be put on a stamp, and jump right to the fact that Josh loves that face enough to see it preserved for posterity.
Anniversary Flowers So bosses give their assistants flowers - really nice bosses remember birthdays, and Secretaries Day ( if they actually know when that is), but I know no bosses who send flowers to mark the occasion of when that person started working for them ( if they even remember). What's more , what boss refers to this occasion as "our anniversary"? Even without all the other clues... this one is pretty big.
Beers and Red Lights Okay, folks , this one is the icing on the cake. The one that even the most painfully unobservant couldn't help but notice.
Josh: " I'm just saying ...if you were in an accident, I wouldn't stop for a
beer."
Donna: " If you were in an accident, I wouldn't stop for red lights..."
No explanation necessary...Right?

The Confusion Value of Misdirection...
"Gather ye Rosebuds" Let's examine this statement:
" Josh, I think you have a crush on Joey Lucas
and I think you should do something about it,
cause you're really starting to bother me."
Now, the unobservant person would think that Donna is encouraging Josh to ask out Joey Lucas. In my opinion this translates into- 'Josh, you really need to stop mooning over this Joey Lucas person, because it's bugging me. So go see for yourself that she's sleeping with Al Keifer, so you can get over it.'
See, I have this secret suspicion that Donna knew exactly who Joey Lucas was sharing a room with when she sent Josh over there to say goodbye...Good assistants know these things.
Matching Monogramed Towels Oh yeah- use the inevitable trappings of married life to encourage a forty year-old bachelor that he should date someone. If that's not reverse psychology- then I don't know what it is...
The April Snarking This one is a little more subtle. This is for those of us who are as tuned to the subtleties of Josh and Donna as a concert pianist is to an errant note, or it's just really wild conjecture...
Josh, also referred to as the "Prince of Passive/Agressive Behavior" , gives Donna flowers every April. He does this with full knowledge that Donna started working for him in February. I very seriously doubt that a Fulbright Scholar can't distinguish between February and April, so therein lies the snarking. It's my opinion that the reason he gives the flowers in April is that in Josh's mind, the return in April was more about her coming back to him than coming back to the campaign. April is the time when she left "Dr. Freeride" irrevocably in the dust and came back to him.
Independent and Outside Evidence of the Misdirection , or the "If you polled 100 Donna's" line of reasoning. According to a conversation that Joey Lucas has with Josh...
"If you polled a hundred Donna's and asked them if we should go out, you'd get a high positive response. What the poll wouldn't tell you is that she likes you and she knows it's starting to show, so she's trying to cover herself in misdirection."
So here we have not only the concept, but the actual word.

Of course, these are just my observations...I could be totally wrong. All evidence to the contrary.
If you have any observations to support my little theory that I may have overlooked, please feel free to let me know and I'll add them in.
