You saw Andy's smiling face on Olivia Newton-John's TV special, on the Sgt. Pepper premiere telecast, and on many other guest spots over the last year and a half. Keep your fingers crossed and perhaps this year he'll have that super TV special of his own! But behind the smile, the twinkling brown eyes, and the dreamy voice, could you guess Andy Gibb's very personal secret - you know, the one about those two Australian lovelies?
The Women in His Life
Andy's Australian ladies are his little daughter, Peta, and his beautiful blond ex-wife, Kim Reeder - and, according to all the varied reports, they really seem to have been left behind in the recesses of Andy's memory!
Andy met Kim when he was almost eighteen, through his older sister Lesley. Lesley lives in Australia with her family and raises dogs - that's how she met Kim Reeder, the girl she introduced to her baby brother on that very fateful day well over two years ago. Little did Lesley know that the sparks that flew through the air that day had little to do with Andy and Kim's love of animals - it was definitely a case of love at first sight! And for the two teenaged lovers, heading for the altar was almost the very next step they took - an unfortunate step, as things turned out.
His Career
During Andy and Kim's courtship, Andy's musical career was making really fast headway. He, with the help of his brother, the Bee Gees, put together his very first record album, Flowing Rivers - this after many years (he dropped out of school at 13!) of nightclub and stage performing. From that album came Andy's first big hit single, "I Just Want To Be Your Everything", and a whole new set of plans for his future.
Having made a name for himself with his very first single in Australia, Andy decided to take a crack at U.S. audiences - after all, if he was knocking 'em dead down under, he could certainly do as well - or better - in America! And that's exactly what Andy did -- he took Kim to live in Miami, Florida on an 80-foot houseboat (formerly owned by a reputedly shady character!) - and that seemed to be the beginning of the end of Andy and Kim's romance!
All Things To All People
So it happened that Andy and Kim found themselves in the U.S. at the ripe old age of 19! Andy's "I Just Want To Be Your Everything" became a super smash hit with every female of every age - but most especially Kim Gibb! Why was it such an important song to Kim - after all she'd heard it so many times before? The answer, of course, lay in the fact that she was losing the attention of her husband, who was no very busy - literally, all tied up - in the promotion of his now very hot U.S. album. What's more, he seemed to be losing interest in her too. Andy at 19, was still just a teenager, and as such, experienced all the fantasies that teens have about achieving fame and fortune. Kim, slightly more mature perhaps - as girls have a way of being at that age - realized that Andy's frequent trips away from home, and all those girls who were now paying very close attention to every move he made, were not the things that good marriages are made of - at least, it seemed that way in this case.
Andy was trying to do and be everything - all at once. And the thing he forgot about quickest - or was easiest to leave behind - was his marriage to Kim! It was beginning to tie him down too much - you can imagine how he must have felt every time he had to go off somewhere. Maybe it was getting a bit boring too, something the world of rock 'n roll never was! For how much longer did he, at 19, want to go on being a tied-down husband, and as fate would have it, a father too? With the pressures of impending fatherhood, it was all that Andy could do to decide what the fate of his yet very new romance with Kim would be. Before long, though, there was nothing for Andy to decide - Kim went back to Australia to have her baby. It seemed pretty clear that Andy Gibb was going to be a superstar - and that was just about all that any human being could manage to be at one time!
Having His Baby
So Andy was left to his life in the U.S. along with brother Barry and his family, brother Maurice and his family, and his folks, Barbara and Hugh. Rumors ran hot n' heavy about Andy and his break-up with Kim - especially in the Australian papers. While news of the marital split was kept to a minimum in the U.S., in Australia the papers were having a heyday! Daily there were stories of how Kim had to go on welfare and live on small amounts of money a week (ranging from $42 - $80 depending on which paper you read!), while her hubby spent his time dating beautiful young women in the U.S. - most particularly actress Susan George. When Andy's baby was finally born it turned out to be one lovely little girl, and not the rumored twins that Andy had supposedly "abandoned." Andy's daughter was named Peta Jaye Gibb.
After the birth of his first child, Andy was bombarded by press from all over the world for some explanation of what had happened, and also what the future held in store for the Andy Gibb family. Was Andy really being a skunk to his wife, or was he merely the victim, a statistic, of teenage marriage? Feeling that too much publicity would hurt any chances of the marriage lasting, Andy said little to the papers - even with those awful rumors coming out of Australia.
The end of Andy's marriage to Kim Reeder was announced with a simple, legal document which served as a nice balance to all the guessing and hysteria that surrounded the "mystery" in Andy's life. Andy, by that time, had established himself as a unique talent, and the press was taking him much more seriously than just a fly-by-night performer who had an unfortunate experience to talk about. And Andy, for his part, had matured to the point of being able to make that decision about his personal future - and also, he'd learned that he'd have to tell his fans something - if only for one single announcement.
"We have entered into agreements terminating our marital disputes . . . We are satisfied that our difficulties have been compromised and that adequate and proper provisions have been made for the present and future welfare of Kim and our daughter, Peta Jaye Gibb." That's how part of the official word read from Andy and Kim's lawyers. Other than that, there was no further comment.
The Girls He Left Behind
Ask Andy about his ex-wife and daughter today, and you're as likely to get a blank stare as anything else. It's no secret that Andy doesn't like talking about his marriage, divorce, or child. No one really knows if Andy is even in touch with Kim and Peta - certainly, the last person who's likely to discuss it is Andy himself.
With the success of Andy's last LP, Shadow Dancing, he's entirely too busy to dwell on the past - at least, publicly anyway. What goes on in Andy's mind and heart is known only to those in his immediate family. Too familiar with the sad events that surround divorce, the Gibb clan offers Andy their complete support, as well they should. Andy's committed no crime. He hasn't been dreadfully horrible to anyone - at least not knowingly. The worst you can say about the cute blond star is that he made the mistake of marrying very early in his life - an in full view of the entire world at that! When it comes right down to it, Andy's really a nice guy! Whatever arrangements he's made with his ex-wife about his daughter are probably the very best ones possible. Little Peta will no doubt grow up knowing her famous daddy very well - but you'll never hear anything about her, or her mother, from Andy himself. That part of his life is still too private and painful a chapter for any interview - for now anyway.
