If you'd had the same experience as I had, you'd be talking about it for a long time. I was onstage with Andy Gibb!
Early that morning, Andy's road crew arrived. First came the speakers, amplifiers and microphones; then the drum set and piano. The last item to be placed onstage was an exquisite Persian rug that makes Andy feel at home while performing.
It wasn't until early evening that all the preparations were complete. Suddenly I heard screaming. Thousands of fans were being admitted to the arena. Some of them had been waiting since 10:00 that morning. Soon the arena was mobbed with cheering Andy Gibb fans. But where was Andy???
I anxiously waited backstage to meet the star whom I only knew from my radio. The Allessi Brothers were warming up the crowed with their lively rock 'n' roll. The fans loved them, but it was Andy they had really come out in droves to see.
I looked behind me and noticed a caravan of huge trailers pulling into the lot behind the arena. Out of the first came the band and Andy's backup singers. Out of the second came Mom and Dad Gibb, followed finally by Andy himself.
Wearing tight jeans and a red button-down shirt, Andy looked eager to get onstage and meet his fans.
After a few minutes and a change of set, I got the word that Andy was ready. His mother planted a good luck kiss on his cheek as he climbed up the back stairway to the stage. By the time he reached the stage, the roar of the crowd became deafening. The lights slowly dimmed. The opening notes of (Love Is) Thicker Than Water wafted through the air of the outdoor arena. The crowd was ecstatic. Then suddenly, the lights flashed on and there he was.
The audience went wild. They screamed so loud I couldn't hear the music from the amplifiers right next to me. But he sang on with a smile brighter than his white running sneakers.
I had never seen a performer enjoy singing for his fans as much as Andy did. He'd run down to the left edge of the stage and sing to them. Next Andy rushed back to his drummer. A few seconds later he was on the edge of the stage, reaching for his fans. Andy was so full of energy!
At one point people began to toss things up on stage. I thought we were in danger of getting hurt. But I was wrong. We were being showered with flowers, stuffed animals and love notes!
With each new song you could see Andy working up a healthy sweat. He was really giving the audience his everything. And the harder he worked, the more he seemed to enjoy it. Andy sang and danced for over 90 minutes -- only taking one quick break for a glass of water. But then he was right back on stage hotter than ever. To cool down he buttoned his shirt. Andy's rendition of I Just Want To Be Your Everything was the best I ever heard. But when he sang Shadow Dancing -- his hips rocking to the music -- the crowd went mad.
All too soon, the concert reached its end, and the lights went out. The fans cried out for more -- and Andy did not disappoint them. He reappeared, this time with his shirt tied around his waist. And for an encore, Andy sang Everlasting Love.
The stage lights dimmed, the house lights went up. The show was over. Andy breathed heavily in a state of exhaustion. His body was glowing with perspiration, and his face was glowing with satisfaction. For Andy, this is true happiness -- to totally give himself over to his fans. Andy was tired, but it sure felt good.
